The Exotic Upgrade System is horribly flawed

So, let me get this straight... it costs me more to upgrade an exotic item that I already have than to just buy it outright from xur?! Example: I have a voidfang vestments that is fully upgraded (before the change to material requirements, so I put many ascendant shards into it, not to mention glimmer, patrol materials, and hadronic essences, oh and time) and it would cost me almost 8000 glimmer, an exotic shard, AND I have to trade in the old one. This is all to get a reset, overall more powerful version. So, I'll also have to put all of the glimmer, time, materials, essences, and yet another exotic shard to get it upgraded again. Since xur is selling the voidfang vestments this week, I can shard my old one and at least recoup some of the materials and an exotic shard and buy it for coins which are easy to get. Since all of the perks are getting reset you should have JUST required the item as a 1 to 1 trade in. Hell, if you trade in a fully upgraded one, you should get a fully upgraded one back OR at least get some materials back with the trade in. There is no reason to require the glimmer and exotic shard cost to upgrade an old exotic. By trading in your old one, you're already giving up a potential exotic shard that could have been used to upgrade the new version. I'd love to understand the "logic" behind the decision to punish people that have gotten exotics and fully upgraded them before the expansion.

  • This post again? Didnt we already state that this was a flawed system when tdb launched? Also mr op, luke smith came out and said theyre working on something different and who knows what it might be but it should be better than what we have

    • You don't have to do it dude And yes if you want to ascend your gear you have to put more time into it

    • Was voidfang one of your first chest pieces? Complaining about essences tells me you've never actually grinded. Grinding on my warlock has given me over a thousand essence. No room for complaining on that end. If you don't wanna pay for the reset then don't upgrade it. It's a choice now; whether to value having the exotic piece and resetting it or scrapping the old version in hopes you'll acquire a new one. This helps balance (slightly) the [exotic sense of exotics, where they're valued for their rare power not their automatic gimme to everyone.

        • A nice compromise would have been to receive the new exotic armor/weapons with the exotic perks already usable. Damage and defense would still need to be leveled up.

          • Yes bs I've said it before if anything it should be one exotic shard and you get max power and everything should be available to upgrade whenever you the material to do so. Still waiting for my ice breaker upgrade should've done it when I first saw that xur had it available.

          • Well, I got 14 Exotic Weapons and 13 pieces of Exotic Armor which are Useless now, both in Attack Level or Light Level which adds to the Damage i do, unless i want to Level them all again up. Also i tried Several times to get a Set of Raid Gear together to get to lvl 30, but everytime the missin piece wasnt dropping. Now its all useless because every single new Legendary piece is better than my Exotics or my Raid Amor. Not to Speak of the 27 Exotic shards i need to level them up or the 238.869 pieces of Glimmer i need. Great way to deal with players who enjoyed the Game until now. Thanks BungieVi$ion

I don't know which is sadder; you guys getting your tampons stuck, or the fact that you're playing a game you claim to hate. Xur is just not only selling upgrades to goods he already sells btw; he doesn't sell the Thorn. Is it kind of a pain that I will have to redo my tree for my MIDA Mini Tool after I upgrade it when Xur offers it, yeah, but I won't be a candy ass and complain like a bitch about it. Why just yesterday I got a legendary engram that turned into a Thunderlord. Xur had the Thunderlord on the upgradeable, so I spent the extra crystal and bam, upgraded Thunderlord. You people really need to sit back and figure out the simplest shit. Since Xur is selling exotic engrams, and Motes are very easy to aquire, just buy exotic engrams. Chances are, you won't need it, and presto, instant exotic crystal.

Your first statement makes no sense... It cost around 7-8k glimmer and a shard which costs 7coins. How is that more expensive especially for a primary.

                  • Welcome to gear progression games. This is not the first game to render 'old' gear useless, nor will it be the last. Be thankful that Bungie allowed people to upgrade old Exotics, almost every other gear progression game in existence completely replaces older gear.

                          • I did the same thing...doesn't make any sense to pay all that when you can just buy the damn thing and dismantle the old one so you already have the Exotic shard...they should of have two options to it, if you had one FULLY upgraded get it just pay full price (glimmer, trade in, and exotic shard) but get a fully upgraded version. And half the price for a full reset .

                          • It costs 7 coins or 1 shard plus 7000 glimmer to upgrade an exotic. Then another shard to max it, so that's 2 shards or 14 coins. It costs 13 coins for armor, 13 for heavy, 17 for special or 23 for primary to purchase a new exotic from Xûr. So if you exchanged your Voidfang and then maxed it, it would cost you 14 coins. If you bought it new, it would cost 20 coins to max it (unless you have some other exotic shards to feed it) TLW: it's cheaper, but demoralizing and slow to reXûrbish your exotics.

                            • An evolution of the progression systems are likely to be present in this game... ...well always, most likely. Being able to purchase farmables is good. But completely removing ascendant materials is a bit of a jip. I do agree that we spent a good amount of time grinding those weapons up, now with only one shard that you can purchase along with everything else, seems like its overall easier.

Again, total cost to buy new is 13 coins. You have your old gear to dismantle for the final upgrade shard, so don't need to spend anything else. Total cost to upgrade gear is 21 coins + 7000 glimmer. The extra 7 coins is factoring in the shard you lose by having to trade in your old gear.

                            • I agree it seems a bit steep, but it really doesn't require as much as your portraying. 1) The newly upgraded exotics do NOT require ascended shards/energies, therefore your "time" farming those materials are no required on the 2nd go around. However, I believe you SHOULD be refunded "some" because there is no difference upgraded regardless if your "old" exotic was fully upgraded or not. It should factor in the amount of time and or materials used upon the trade and then cost accordingly. 2) Relic Iron, Spinmetal, Spirit Bloom, and Helium are in abundance ESPECIALLY since you can easily trade marks for them. 3) 8k glimmer seems like a lot, but honestly if you merely USE your glimmer gain items (ether seeds, black wax, ect) you can easily farm more than enough glimmer to afford several upgrades in just a few hours. I believe I played for about 6 hours earlier today and began with 11k glimmer. In that time I upgraded my Ice Breaker, Thorn, and Suros not to mention several upgrades for each and other pieces of equipment. I understand some people do not have that kind of time to play, but even if you are limited, you can use your time wisely. Glimmer is the easiest thing to farm in the game. Simply play and don't forget to use your glimmer items!
