Guardians Face the Darkness Completely Crippled [A reflection on the state of gear in Destiny]

In addition to lots of sentiments widely expressed by the community, I wanted to share my thoughts on exotics in light of the impending changes to Destiny and based on my general experience with the game so far. Of course, I am loving Destiny, (Level 30 Hunter, 29 Titan, 22 Warlock) I've played a lot, though not as much as others, but I feel reasonably competent and accomplished. I also have enjoyed many moments in the game despite some confusing, off-putting, and disappointing experiences. Prior to the launch of Destiny, I believed so much in this game that I bought two Destiny PS4s for my two best friends so that we could fight the Darkness together (we live scattered across the country and games are one of the few ways we still manage to keep in touch). We had a great time going through the story even if the ending confused and disappointed us. I've personally had a great time in Crucible (mixed opinions by others). But at the end of the day, the current situation leaves me feeling disenchanted. I know the game could be so much more. Yes, I love Destiny, and I've wanted to help it improve so badly that I've applied to work for Bungie (no reply even though the position is still listed as open). I threw this graphic together purely based on my experience and rather hastily. Other folks have done brilliant analysis of the game, but fundamentally, games should be fun and I feel that something related to these ideas could be adjusted to improve fun, therefore retention, and sales of Destiny. Please share your thoughts and feedback. I hope this is helpful for other Guardians and Bungie.

  • While you may think that carrying around otherwise "useless" legendaries to fill up your weapon slots is a bane, I'm the opposite. All the weapons/armor I carry on my titan all have a purpose. Just my primaries alone, I carry three exotics and three equivalent legendaries (AR for AR, Scout for Scout, etc.) This is for 2 reasons: A) obviously to be able to swap out gear because of the current litmitations (which I think is fair) and B) The actual stats of the gear. Ex: I have the Mida Muli Tool and Aries Nemesis Scout rifles. The Mida allows me to move around faster, has a faster fire rate, and still has a solid punch. But the Nemesis punches harder and has the firefly perk, which will allow me to do aoe damage to a cluster of enemies as i pop their skulls. As such i consider both of those weapons equally valuable to me, despite the difference in quality. The same goes for my armor. I main as a Titan, and with my current variety or armor choices, I can switch my gear around with whatever situation I'm going into. My general purpose setup uses the Armamentarium, which allows for a good on the fly adaptability if i need it. If i just wanna wreck shop, I'll switch to the Helm of Inmost Light. If I'm going into control or Nightfalls with buddies, I'll swap to defender and Helm of Saint-14. If I'm going into skirmish, I'll swap to No Backup Plans and defender, using my little made up subclass i call "aggressor". But point being all of my legendary armor compliments all of my setups, so the difference in gear quality really doesn't bother me at all. Now after the DLC is released and the exotics are changed, this might put a dent in how effective my gear may perform. But then again, it might not be so drastic a change that my legendary quality gear becomes obsolete. We won't know the full details until that change goes into effect. Even then, new legendary quality gear will be sold by vendors and offered as prize drops. So I think the change won't be so bad.

    • It a weird situation really. On one side they want you to have your old exotics and want you to still be able to use them. What they don't want is you to have them fully upgraded so they automatically crowd out the new gear and stop you from using them. There's a sense of exploration but it will always be a side thing because you will use the 360 gun over the 300 gun no matter what. Its really just a means to stop you from having maxed out guns when you fight all the new shit. It really shits on difficulty.
