On Community Feedback

Hey, there. I'd like to see if we can create a sense of understanding about something. I see a lot of threads on this forum that say things like "Please read this, DEEJ!" or "I hope Bungie sees this!" We read all of this feedback. More people than you would suspect look in on the forum here and in places all over the Internet where players talk about Destiny. We take it in. We measure it against data we have on our end. We triage it against our own wish lists. We plan our work based on the people we have on our team and the hours we have in any given work day. We choose our battles on the development floor the same way you do when you look at your Director. "What can I accomplish next to get better?" is the essential question. There is a process in place to support Destiny. You, constant reader, are a part of that process. Your voice is, by my proxy, a part of the conversation - even when it makes the meeting to which I've been invited a little contentious. I do not post in every thread that appears on this forum because I don't assume you'll settle for being placated with a stock "We hear you!" every time one of you has a good idea. The promise I can make is that I am working with the developers to make sure that they understand how you feel as they go about making their decisions. Now, there will be times when I focus on the positive. There are people in this community who deserve an introduction to happy gamers who are doing amazing things to provide a service to their fellow Guardians. Those people deserve their due credit. This does not mean that I'm dodging your feedback. It means that I'm attempting to see our community from every angle - to give everyone a voice. This may have been ill-advised, but it's something I wanted to say. Hopefully it doesn't blow up in my face, because I actually do like talking to you on the forum. I respect the people who take the time to express their honest opinions on this and other forums. I would compel you not to stop. That is all. For now.

Edit: TL;DR: Vague posts not helpful. We'd like our specific concerns addressed with at least a minor level of acknowledgement and detail. Deej, This is another example of the ambigious and non-specific type of communication that I wrote to Bungie about yesterday and many of us do not find useful. The general understanding is that Bungie in some form is reading the feedback forum, at least the articulate and well reasoned posts. To say
We read all of this feedback. More people than you would suspect look in on the forum here and in places all over the Internet where players talk about Destiny.
I believe most of us are already under that assumption. The problem is that when you reply your response is:
The promise I can make is that I am working with the developers to make sure that they understand how you feel as they go about making their decisions.
It means very little. What is the result of that sort of exchange? The meeting about community feedback, what can you tell us about it? The community is to the point that they are asking for specifics. We've been submitting feedback for nearly two months now. We have been vocal about some specific things which require specific acknowledgement. I am not trying to insult you or be critical of your job performance but these generalized posts do nothing to abate the problems the community has. Is there a roadmap and does it include some of the community requested changes? What community feedback has garnered significant recognition from development? What is the timeline on those items in a general sense? These are examples of specific answers you could give us in order to help settle the nerves around here. Please, listen to the actual needs and desires of the community. I want Destiny to succeed but the sands in the hour glass of patience are running out for many of us.

      • As long as are voices are heard that is good. This is one of the most passionate communities I've been a part of. Some of it misguided but everyone has their opinions. We want this game to grow into what we hope it will become. It is time for Bungie to become legend once again.

      • Or maybe if you engaged your audience once in a while, there wouldn't be this huge disconnect within the community and things wouldn't get out of control.

Edit: Below is an example of how I thought it might be beneficial to see some communication back from bungie regards updates and pressing community concerns. All content is for example only. Current Issues Status ------------------------- Hi Guardians. Below is a list of all the current major requests from you the community, each one has a status which I will keep updated and where possible a dev comment. I appreciate that not all issues will be on this initial list as I am sure you know there is a lot of feedback to go through, report and get a comment back on but this list will be updated and is an ongoing project. Issue 1 Thorn, Bad Juju, Exotic Updates Status: Fix In Progress Dev Comment: We are aware of this and working on the update which will go live in the next hot-fix. Issue 2 Raid Matchmaking Status: Under Consideration Dev Comment: We are aware of how much the community want this and we are looking at how we can get it in game. Issue 3 More Storyline Content Status: In Progress Dev Comment: We hear you loud and clear, we apologise that many of you find the story content is lacking. Rest assured we are working day and night to create more new content and ways to better visualise and incorporate the rich story contained in the grimoire cards directly in game. Great content does take time to create so please bear with us it is coming. –------------------------- And so on and so forth... Edit: If you want answers / feedback like this then vote with a like or a comment. Much appreciate the comments so far :) Edit: Thanks for all the bumps guys really appreciate that! Deej has responded...but I think he totally misunderstood the post...
All known topics of conversation. But continue to bump.
I think he scanned it and thought I / We were bumping the !!!EXAMPLE!!! Issues i was using as opposed to the actual point of the post. Thanks again though for all the support you have all been brilliant! Edit: removed reference to ETA's as that could cause issues if things over ran. Please note these are EXAMPLE issues made up just for placement to show how the formatting of future communications from bungie to the community regards updates could be. I am not promoting these actual issues. Edit: Just a final thanks to everyone who got behind this. It was just an idea and suggestion. I would think bungie have read it now and if they are so inclined will have taken what they want from it. I will be leaving this thread alone now as there isn't much else to say. Thanks again much love - DP

                  • Hey deej! Thank you for letting us know of your continued observations of what we have to say! It would be an impossible feat for an one person to reply to every post that is out there and I understand like many what this entails! Please continue to be the positive person you are on the forums and good job so far. I for one am staying with destiny for the long haul for I wish to see the game the people at bungie have created be formed into an even greater deeper universe. Keep up the good work BUNGIE! See you star-side DEEJ. I'm awaiting my opportunity to prove myself in the crucible against you!

DeeJ I like the game and Im glad you are listening to our feedback. But every time you make an announcement It sounds like the speaker... DeeJ: I am the one who speaks for Bungie. You must have no end of questions gamer... Gamer: So whats happening with our feedback? DeeJ: I could tell you of the great battle that's happening on the forums, of how changes are coming. I could tell of the changes to the game during development. There are many tales told throughout the forums to scare gamers... Lately those tales have stopped and the gamers are frightened anyway... Gamer: ??? LOL just how it feels sometimes. Note: Thanks to everybody who liked and commented (and to everybody who does the same). You all deserve the credit and my gratitude for keeping it bumped so everybody can have a laugh. Again thanks
Disclaimer - I am not a Bungie employee, representative, spokesperson of any kind. I have no "insider" information. The "Ninja" badge on my nameplate simply denotes that I am a volunteer forum moderator. (most of you forum vets already know this, but just wanted to be sure some of our newer folks don't think that this is official or some kind of Bungie PR/marketing thing)
Guys and gals, especially those of you complaining: If you expect DeeJ to read and respond to your long posts re Destiny feedback, then you have the time to read this post and give it some consideration. Please do. Having been pretty involved in this community for over 8 years now, and being one of the few who has the responsibility of dealing with the community on a large, broad scale (rather than only participating in topics that interest you, like most community members have the luxury of doing), I feel like it's important to say three things here. I'll try to keep it reasonable in length: 1. The volume of feedback from the Community is overwhelming. Responding to everybody is impossible. This is easy to prove/demonstrate, and anyone can try it. Go to #Help for just 15 minutes and try to answer questions. When a question pops up in #Help with no replies, go find the answer (it's usually available somewhere), come back, and type the response in a polite and helpful way. Then try to answer as many as you can in 15 minutes. Then imagine that this level of volume and work NEVER stops. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Sounds like a lot for one guy (or even a small team) to deal with, right? Well keep in mind -- that's just 15 minutes in only one forum. DeeJ's responsibilities have him keeping track not only of #Destiny, #Feedback, #Help, #Clans, #Bungie, and #Community, but also of dozens (maybe hundreds) of other Destiny-focused gaming communities around the Internet and with gamers around the world contributing 24/7, in a dozen language. Add in live tweets, Twitch chats, and social media with the comments of millions of people who have bought the game, and you can see that the volume of commentary is insane. It might be possible to monitor all or most of it, but responding to all of it is simply not going to happen. It's probably unreasonable to expect a response at all -- it is DEFINITELY unreasonable to expect an in-depth, detailed response to your particular comments. Still doesn't mean he (and, in turn, Bungie) is/are not listening. 2. Specific answers and future plans could be more harmful than helpful. This one may stir the pot a little bit, but DeeJ's broader answers ("we're listening," "we're working to identify and resolve issues," etc.) are far more preferable than specific answers ("we've heard your feedback about X issue and we'll have it fixed by doing Y in Z number of days"), in my opinion. Why? Because this complaint: "Bungie won't tell us what they're planning with any specificity!" is far better than this complaint: "Bungie LIED to us and made us false promises!" You are sophisticated gamers. You already know that game development is a dynamic, ever-changing process. One tweak here might break another feature there (weapon balance). Patching one obvious exploit may simply lead players to discover 10 new ones (loot caves). Projects to deliver new content can be delayed by test problems, bugs, employee departures, and a whole host of other things. Sometimes they get scrapped entirely for any variety of reasons. Yet despite claiming to realize this, Destiny players around the world have been quick to seize on pre-launch marketing materials and point out exactly what didn't make it into the game at launch. Take your pick -- "That's all gonna be explorable space," "Out here in the wild, this is how we talk," gear trading, factions, customization, etc. The resounding chorus has been accusations of incompetence, greed, or lies on Bungie's part. Yet every gamer claims to already know everything I mentioned in the previous paragraph. And just in case you didn't, every single marketing piece that came out pre-launch was marked with disclaimers like "All items, details, names, and pieces of random trivia are subject to change" and "Work in progress." How quickly some folks seem to forget this when it's convenient for them. But here we are again, right here in this thread and in hundreds of others, with some folks demanding, requesting, and sometimes practically begging for Bungie to "lie" to them by giving details of what they're working on. All of this despite knowing full well that these things might be changed, scrapped, or added onto. And remember that there is a demonstrable history in this community of some members making every difference between "still-in-development material" --> "final material" a reason to accuse Bungie of lying. I'd urge you all to put yourself in the game dev's shoes right now instead of your own. And I'd argue that DeeJ's broad answers and reassurances that Bungie is paying attention and listening are a far more preferable way to proceed -- you might not get as much information up front, but you won't feel like DeeJ/Bungie makes false promises that they can't or won't deliver on. 3. Bungie is clearly working hard on Destiny. This is something that I doubt any of you would dispute, but that I suspect many of you don't remember. Bungie doesn't want to make this a bad gaming experience for you. Bungie wants you to have fun playing the game; they're not just sitting around counting piles cash and laughing maniacally. It is BLATANTLY clear that they are still working their asses off on this game and future content. Numerous employees regularly respond in these forums. There have been 4 patches to the game already and two long-term special events. New content is on the way. Bungie employees entered into this industry specifically to make great games with a great team. If they only wanted to make money off of you, they'd be in a different line of business. Or making mobile games like Candy Crush. These guys and gals are gamers just like you, and they play games in the same way you do. When things are not ideal, they want them addressed just like you do. But as noted many times already, these things just take time and may (in fact are LIKELY to) experience delays in some cases. In closing, my advice is to be critical and provide your feedback as thoroughly as you can. Good, critical community feedback can truly make a difference between good games and great ones, and nobody knows this better than Bungie (Halo vets will remember the old Optimatch Forum here on Bungie.net). But at the same time, please be patient, understanding, and reasonable. You're all still here because you're all still playing Destiny -- keep that in mind too and ask yourselves why. Thinking about the process of game development in addition to your own preferences and desires will help avoid temper flare-ups and anger that do not help anyone and, in fact, might make this whole process a lot harder.
