why do you choose atheism over other religions?

I'm a "Christian" and I was just curious of your reasoning. The reason why I put quotes on the word Christian is because people associate that with religion and practices and rules and I'm not about that I'm just a follower of Jesus and I have a relationship not a religion.

  • Everyone is born an atheist, so it's not exactly something you choose.

    • If God was truly really wouldn't there be one religion everyone follows? I mean it would only make sense

    • Logically God is impossible and when life doesn't go your way long enough you stop putting your faith in something like that.

        • Atheism isn't a choice. It is not practicing religion because there is not enough proof to convince myself that God exists. If you have it, be grateful. I see my life as a ticking timer.

        • Atheism is not a religion. It is not a belief. It is the absence of belief in a religion. I don't call myself an anti-Santa believer. I just don't say I believe in Santa. The burden of proof is on the believer to convince the non-believer. Until the non-believer (or atheist) is convinced, why should they believe?

        • There's a book called awkward moments for a young Christian or something similar, read it and have your eyes opened, have you ever read the bible? I mean ALL of it every testament it's pretty disturbing. The the burning of children, genocide really horrific stuff! I'm from England religion seems to die more and more every generation it is an obsolete practise and I'm glad it's on the way out I think it's destroying the planet. You sound like a nice guy but your really aurpressing life with religion, you sound like your only a half Christian though, someone who's religious because that's how you've been brought up, but open your eyes and see the real world, it's beautiful but broken, but it is honest.

              • I am going to suggest a book to anyone Christian, Atheist, Muslim, etc... It is called 50 Things You Need To Know About Religion. It is informative and is unique in that it doesn't preach about any religion but doesn't insult religious people by treating it like a bunch of stories. I recommend it to anyone who wants to know anything about religion.

              • The principles of religion I find baffling, religions are made for lack of better answers, if we really found god just floating past jupiter, religion would cease, because religions are based off faith, and the idea that "I'm pretty sure there's a god and I question those who aren't sure gods real" is baffling.

I am Agnostic (don't believe in God, but don't dispute that he could exist, just no physical evidence proves his existence) because I was brought up Catholic. I completed Confirmation and my First Holy Communion, read the King James Version of the Bible. Then I grew up a bit and started to question the Bible and God's existence, let me explain my questions and the answers I found. First, I have a problem with the story of Abraham. God told him to sacrifice his own son to prove his loyalty. But if God is supposed to be omnipotent (all powerful, all knowing) then why would God ever have anyone prove their loyalty!? It is completely illogical! Second, Biblical scholars know that the Star of Bethlehem shines in the Summer, not the Winter and that Jesus' real birthday is sometime in the middle of July, not in December. So why then do we have Christmas in December? Well, that is because when Christianity first came about, the major religion at the time was Paganism. Pagans celebrated Saturnalia, a weeks long celebration and worship to their God of Nature, Saturn. Pagans would chop down an Evergreen tree and put it in their house as to protect Mother Nature from the Winter Solstice, the shortest, coldest and longest night of Winter, which falls on December 21st. This is where we get the "Christmas Tree," because Christianity had to adopt Pagan traditions in order to convert Pagans. There is further evidence of this with Easter, Easter was originally called Ishtar, which was another Pagan celebration/worship where they worshiped their God of Fertility, who was often symbolized as an egg or a rabbit, thus this is where Christians get the "Easter Egg" and the "Easter Bunny." Ever wonder what an egg or a rabbit has to do with Jesus? Yes, that's right nothing. Christians stole Pagan traditions and called them their own purely to convert the major religion at the time. Lastly, did you know that the Bible that is sold and read today is no where near the original? The King James Version had verses ripped out, added, and altered, so what most American Christians hold as the "word of God" is not that at all. For example, the Leviticus verse that all the Gay-Bashers love to quote about homosexuality never existed in the original, in fact the original used the word, "effeminate," which is not gender specific but means someone who values physical appearance over personality, nor does the verse say anything about sexual orientation. To prove this to you check out the video, it is a song called Bible by a rapper by the name of Ras Kass, the song is irrelevant, but at the end of the song, he put a short clip of an interview of a Born-Again Christian admitting that these Bibles we have today are no where near what the original did say. So in conclusion, Catholism/Christianity are a giant lie, not to mention the Crusades, where they killed thousands of people in the "name of God." It's highly illogical and if God does exist, he doesn't affect our daily lives in a direct way.

                  • You say "over other religions" as if atheism is a religion. Atheism is not a religion. It is the exact opposite. Atheists value science and things that are based on proven fact. Religion is based on stories and myths made up to keep the masses in line. It's outdated and completely irrelevant in the modern technological age. I'd like to point out that faith and religion are different. Faith is fine; you can believe whatever you want to believe if it makes you happy. But religion as an institution is the biggest mass-delusion ever created to manipulate people into obedience out of fear. While comedic, there's a lot of truth to this skit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r-e2NDSTuE

                    • Atheism isn't a religion, it's a lack of belief in any god(s). I'm an atheist because I'm a humanist: I believe people in the here and now are more important than a deity that we can't even know exists.
