I think Destiny can do its own thing without needing to be as popular as Halo. I will say that Destiny is very reminiscent to Halo thanks to the same engine (tweaked or otherwise, it's still almost identical), and the map design feels familiar - as far as I'm concerned, Destiny is as close to Halo as Bungie can get without actually having to make those games. As much as I liked Halo 3's multiplayer it was really only the Forge mode that kept me occupied, and without it the game's lifespan would've been considerably shorter for me.
CoD has a style, atmosphere, and many bursts of rewarding feelings that gets you hooked on it like some drug.
For me that doesn't exist. The style and atmosphere are those of a modern military shooter, and the rewards I can quite easily get from PvZ: Garden Warfare. I will say it used to be euphoric because the gameplay was fast and tense, plus it put you in very uncomfortable situations such as close-quarters combat or short timers to complete objectives. I can get that from various other games nowadays though. With Destiny I still found the gameplay to be enjoyable, and I wasn't burnt out on PvP so quickly because it paced itself better than most MP games have. I think that's what counts - not instant gratification, but long lasting appeal and strong replay value.
