Bungie isn't giving out review copies of Destiny until the day before release? How is the press supposed to put together a meaningful and thoughtful review in less than a day?
I'm pretty excited for this game, but shutting out the media like this adds to the suspicion that maybe this game isn't as large as we are expecting.

Maybe it's because the game is really lacking in content.
-
Nah, not raising any red flags for me. It's because of the fact that servers don't go on until 9/9. If they turned them on early, employees who pilfered copies and people who somehow snagged disks could get in too.
-
They aren't giving out review copies until the servers are up. It'd be kinda pointless to give then review copies of the game without the servers. It's not a tactic, just a technological hurdle.
-
I remember the awesome bf4 reviews prior to launch. Then we later find out the "reviewers" were paid hacks by EA ... Personally I don't give a rats about "professional" reviewers anymore. Just play the beta and look up in game video to see for yourself.

Edited by LOLdragon89: 9/3/2014 1:42:20 AMTo everyone who believes the lie they're doing this because the servers wouldn't be up until the 9th: LOL! Here's a list of the things reviewers could evaluate that have nothing to do with online interactions: — Character Customization — Graphics — Gunplay — Music — Story — The general feel of core gameplay mechanics — How many hours of single-player gameplay players can expect from the game — How glitchy or buggy the game is — Overall differences between the game on different platforms — ...basically the 90% of the game that doesn't have to do with yammering at another player If you really, truly believe that Bungie is just doing this out of the goodness of their hearts and reasonable fear that some cold-hearted reviewer is going to write, "This game is TERRIBLE because PvP doesn't exist and the environments feel EMPTY!" then you're already lost to the fanboy machine Activation has been running at full steam for months now. But for those of you who are not yet lost, I implore you to consider the possibility that Destiny might not live up to the hype its marketing team has built for it. Let's all hope it DOES live up to the hype, but please, don't be a blind fanboy.

I think the press has gotten quite a lot of access up to this point. Personally I don't think their tone will change if they have to wait and try the game out with everyone else. I'm a supporter of game journalism but really...
-
Because a large part of the game is having OTHER RANDOM PLAYERS.

Snap that'd be a shame to have to wait to review it til the day of? Piss on all that no one cares this late in the game
-
Dude, you played the beta. What's YOUR review?
-
I wouldn't say they are afraid of revealing the scope of destiny per say but the don't trust the game journalists to review the game without ruining the game for those reading or watching the review
-
Edited by Ultron: 9/3/2014 2:38:35 AMThis kinda worries me. I know why for The Sims 4 (BECAUSE IT SUCKS) ... but Destiny ..... why?
-
Edited by Krisk: 9/3/2014 1:27:25 AMImplying people trust Gaming Journalists and Reviews anymore Oh, #GamerGate
-
So that people don't buy the game based on a review from someone else
-
Maybe because that's when the servers go live. I don't think Destiny could be properly reviewed if the reviewer was the only one playing.
-
Also, people really need to get out of the habit of relying on reviews so heavily. You need to understand, about 95% of all game reviews are basically opinion pieces. The other 5% are the reviews that mention things about the game from a objectional point of view, and I honestly haven't seen any, ever. I just say 5% because I assume SOME game sites out their have integrity. Reviews are bullshit, don't trust them. Try the game yourself, that is the ONLY way you will EVER know if you like it. Don't let other people tell you what you will or won't like. Don't be a mindless drone.
-
They don't have to do it in less than a day. IGN, for instance, often does reviews in progress after certain game releases. It takes about a week or so.
-
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. So Bungie not giving Journalists pre-release copies of the game is part of a conspiracy to make sure no one knows how big the game is? Seriously dude, your imagination is awesome. EDIT: On a more serious note, the reason for Bungie to not give out pre-release copies of the game is likely due to two reasons, one of them is because they don't want ANY details to leak to the public, because gaming 'journalists' (if you can even call them that) can't be trusted at all. Also, it is also very highly likely because they are not setting the Destiny servers live until release day. Bungie said last week that they were expecting some stores to break street date for the game, but it didn't matter because they weren't setting the servers live till the 9th. So what's the point of sending out pre-release copies when they can't play them?
-
Edited by FairlySplendid: 9/2/2014 11:07:46 PMDestiny is too subjective of an experience to trust reviewers, websites. You have to play it yourself. With a few good buddies. The last thing Activision wants is some a-hole who hates ARPGs posting a negative review of Destiny prior to people being able to judge for themselves.
-
Why would we still need a review from a 3rd party after having hands on experience in Alpha and Beta?
-
And why should reviewers and reporters get the game earlier than everyone else? How hard us It to do a review on release day or week?
-
Even if the reporters did get a copy they wouldn't get to play because if they put the servers up early for them, the people who are preloading digital copies could probably play as well before everyone else
-
I think since Destiny is a "MMO" or as some say it is, critics will have to review it over an extended period of time to really delve into the many aspects of the game.
-
Not to mention I could write polygons review right now "I was offended by everything, and they misrepresented woman so much waaaa waaaa"
-
Because it'll take time to really get to things like raids. Of course you can review it based on a few days but its not a full review IMO.
-
Yeah I figured this based on what DeeJ said in the weekly update on 8/22:
Watch this space for updates. There are fun stunts in the works, but nothing solid enough to describe yet. We still need for people to review this game, and cast their expert score in stone. That’s not likely to happen until they see how the launch goes. Destiny is not just a game, it’s a shared journey. To judge that, it will need to begin. As you take your first steps into the Tower, many eyes will be watching. Make us look good!
I believe this is two things. 1. Bungie taking 'no spoilers' to a whole new level. 2. Fair reviews. You can't give an honest review of an online Co-Op multiplayer shooter with only the same handful of fellow reviewers doing the same generalized content. You need them to spread out and actually explore the game to give both good and bad criticisms. Otherwise, you would have a stereotypical "CoD:CopyPaste gets another 9.5/10 by IGN. More of the same stuff, for the same score"
