Bungie isn't giving out review copies of Destiny until the day before release? How is the press supposed to put together a meaningful and thoughtful review in less than a day?
I'm pretty excited for this game, but shutting out the media like this adds to the suspicion that maybe this game isn't as large as we are expecting.

This game doesnt need the media. It set the a record for bungie, the most amount of people playing on their servers at a given moment. And that was jus the beta!! Nobody will give a rip about a review. Everyone's playing it whether the media likes it or not
-
Why does this matter?
-
Do people still read/watch reviews for video games?
-
Who cares.... Been waiting for the game for over a year. And I rarely care what reviewers have to say anyways, the only legitimate opinion, is the one I make by watching gameplay, and playing for myself....

First up, if you aren't sure about the game after alpha (or alpha footage), beta hands on, the countless pieces provided by numerous media outlets, then maybe you should cancel your pre-order. No company has to give out review copies, it's a courtesy, nothing more. As for "meaningful and thoughtful" reviews, I'm not sure what sites you go to, but I have found very few that would be meaningful or thoughtful. It's not "suspicious" at all, they aren't shutting the media out at all, if anything I've been surprised at the level of access that the fans and media have had, when was the last time you saw forbes doing a hands-on piece for a video game? A large part of Destiny is multi-player, and the servers won't be online until launch day, the press managed hands-on at PAX, E3, and not counting Alpha and Beta, which were very close to final product (hint: you don't beta test a month before launch, that was a polish & stress test). Unless you're part of the game review press, and you were planning a launch day special, I'd say not to worry about it. If you're projecting your own fears about the size of the game into no pre-launch review copies, then maybe you should consider cancelling your pre-order until enough reviews come out to alleviate those concerns. It's not meant as a snide remark, just a fact. Bungie isn't holding a gun to your head and forcing you to buy their game, buy it or not, won't bother any of us if you do or don't.

Server based game this make sense dont see the issue
-
Giving no release copies is usually a huge red flag.
-
You played the beta right why do you care what ign thinks of it?
-
I'm guessing this has something to do with the servers, or having everyone start out on the same foot. I don't think reviewers could review this game optimally if other people besides themselves weren't playing, thats probably the reason. Also, its not like Bungie is shutting out the media, the media had PLENTY of oppurtunity to play the game besides the beta and alpha we all got to play. If anything this is a good move for everyone.
-
If they gave press the copies today, they still would not be able to do anything until day of. There is no game without the servers allowing access, and there will be no servers to access until release. So it makes no difference whether they get it before or not.
-
>2014 Come on, 99% of reviewers rare most triple A games 8+. The ones you should look for are the reviews by most people on the internet.
-
doubt you could give a well written review in five days time with a limited amour of other reviewers playing. they pay a lot of the bigger review media to give them good grades anyway. I like to watch twitch or ustream to just watch actual game play.
-
Not worried. The implication behind holding back reviews till after launch is that the developer/publisher doesn't want any negative reviews causing people to hold off on buying a copy of the game. The thing is, we have played the Alpha and the Beta. If Activision or Bungie weren't confident about the game, they wouldn't have let the public play it on 2 separate occasions for a lengthy amount of time.
-
Meaningful review? If the game isn't complete feces reviewers and media always give it 8 plus on a scale of 10.
-
My prediction: Destiny gets criticized for minor things and earns an 8.5-8.7 overall metacritic. It will be smaller than we all hoped in terms of map size, but will be loaded full of evolving content that will keep this game relevant for years. In short, if you loved the beta, you will love this game.
-
best move ever....review media always tells lies and generally writes piss poor articles....let humanity judge....not the press
-
How is the press supposed to put together a meaningful and thoughtful review in less than a day?
lol the day before it's due English paper challenge. No thanks. Besides, Destiny is already super hyped and the DL was open to the public over the weekend. I'm sure most people who were on the fence about getting it has already made up their minds by now.
-
Wait... how is that...? Wat? It's a bold move, but it's what they have been doing all along. With the players AND the media. They kept everything a secret. And they did damn well if you ask me! I'm really happy and I respect them for this move. And it's one of the main reasons you see players all over the world p*ssing their pants to play this game.

It's because the servers won't even be up until Sept. 9th (as previously stated by Bungie "the servers will be up the second it's 09/09 somewhere in the world" and for most of us that's on 08/09 sometime mid day. There's about a 14 hour timezone difference between me in CMT and the first timezone 09/09 touches.) Even if Bungie gave them a copy an entire week early, they couldn't play it.
-
So IGN doesn't fault it for things they praise CoD for?
-
How are you supposed to get a meaningful and thoughtful review out of a shared world shooter when there will be next to no one to share the world with? The best reviews will come when everyone has the game and it can be experienced for how it is supposed to be.
-
I don't buy my games based off reviews hah i buy what I like and personally look at not based off of what other people think of it

Edited by Gristlezz: 9/3/2014 7:10:50 PMI don't find it "suspicious" at all. If you are still skeptical about Destiny after the alpha and beta, then cancel your pre-order and wait for the reviews. Bungie said the servers won't be up until 9/9 anyway. The servers would be empty if they handed out copies to the press already

DeeJ said to come back Friday for the BWU and theyre going to give us the low down about how the game is going to be reviewed.

They don't want to lose pre-orders from the bad reviews. This game is even more overhyped than Titanfall.
