I find the term "shared world shooter" to be very gimmicky. It's as if bungie is attempting to rebrand a genre, sort of how Apple rebranded the mp3 player as an iPod. Just call it what it is: am action role-playing- game. You can create your own character with unique skills and armor, and that character levels up as you play. You can find use magic and upgrade your weapons. These are all the classic characteristics of an RPG. If Destiny is a "shared world shooter", then WoW is a shared world hack and slash, elder scrolls online is a shared world swordfighter.

It is a Shared World Shooter. Bungies logic is undeniable.
-
I agree with this 100%.

Edited by RED TITAN: 8/30/2014 3:22:25 AMWouldn't that make it an MMORPG? (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). I'm am not used to online stuff, so I don't really know. There are apparently shared spaces or something? But I wouldn't be able to tell the difference for the life of me.
-
It's totally an rpg. Just not an mmo.
-
Its a mmorpgfps Mmo= if you raid or need other rl player= massmultiplayer online game Rpg= skill trees Fps= Gun sights
-
Exactly it's a MMO,RPG,FPS game
-
No one denies that it's has those rpg elements, they only use shared world shooter when saying that Destiny is not an mmo.
-
Totally a jrpgfpsmmolagfestaplaooza

What's wrong with shared world shooter. Random public events. Matchmaking in strikes. I feel like I'm sharing the world & shooting shot (I'm drunk guys FYI)

"I haz semantics to argue!" If a dog shits in the woods with no one around, does the shit stink?
-
Edited by a sickly fathom: 8/30/2014 7:12:54 AMThey use the term "shared world shooter" because each server does not support as many players as a typical mmo would. Of course this is entirely opinion based
-
I didn't think it was possible but you actually made a post that wasn't retarded as f*** and makes sense. Are you ok?
-
ehh they can call it whatever they want its marketing , we have seen a few co-operative shooters but not many with PVE that isn't highly instanced , so i think they just trying to emphasize we have good open world content buy the game......
-
Yeah it defo is an RPG, but I call it ORPS so yeah...
-
-
And I shall continue to call it a "shared world shooter".
-
I agree. I think "Shared World Shooter" is their attempt at separating it from strict MMOs and from CoD style shooters. But you are right, it is definitely a SWRPFPS (Shared World Role Playing First Person Shooter).
-
Pretty much. MMORPG does carry a lot of baggage though, so I understand the drive.
-
This I disagree with, it has more in common with shooters than any other genres. It is light in the RPG and MMO elements, not enough to call it either one if those.
-
If you strip it down to barebones, yes. It is an action rpg, just like Dragon's Crown, Legend of Zelda, etc. Except it has guns. And that's where confusion ensues for a lot of people. Most think that it's not an RPG unless it has magic and swords, and most of all, no guns. Especially since Destiny strays from the concept that most action RPG's have (basic story mode, some replayability, but that's about it) nobody thinks it's an RPG. It is an action rpg. But since most wouldn't understand, Bungie just calls it a shared-world shooter so it's less confusing for those who don't know much about the RPG genre. Keep in mind that a fair amount of people here play mostly shooters, and haven't played an RPG in their life. (much less an action rpg.) So, TL:DR, you're right, but to keep it less confusing, Bungie is just calling it a shared world shooter.
-
It is, first and foremost, a Shooter, with MMO elements mixed in, and some RPG stuff tacked on the end. Thus it's a ShMMOoteRPG. You're welcome.
-
In all seriousness, are you a girl?
-
I agree
doesnt happen vary often
-
Longface's posts are a RPG...
-
It's not an RPG. The gameplay mechanics are entirely different.
