There's a fair few explanations, like Hardline, the reaction to it was awful, EA got a huge backlash from that one, Mad Max, well, I doubt the licensed game is getting much in the way of resources, keeping my expectations low for that one. Shadows of Mordor most likely doesn't want to compete with AC Unity, makes sense really. All in all, however, the most logical reason is simple: Publishers wanted games to talk about, developers need a long time to adjust to new tech, publishers want hype, then they have to delay because they can't possibly hit the deadline because they were never going to. Always best to take release dates with a pinch of salt. For example, Mass Effect 2 was set for a christmas release in 2009, but got pushed back to late January, just after the holiday blitz of games, fast forward a couple of years, Mass Effect 3 gets a Holiday 2011 release date... Except it got the same delay to Q1 2012. Put simply delaying things can actually work to increase the hype around something, it's weird but it works.

The atmosphere so far is completely different than the past two years, it seems fairly unprecedented. Shadow was moved so it wouldn't compete with dragon age, the other fantasy rpg that was launching same day before it was pushed back. Unity may not be all it's cracked up to be, I'm getting a bit worn out on Assassin's creed. Ubi also recently announced a different AC game for ps3/360 for October. I remain unsurprised. As for Hardline the beta received plenty of warm response, it was actually pretty fun but the longevity of the game fell I to question with such a limited concept. After playing the beta in June it wouldn't be a game id pay full price for. As far as tech goes as long as they aren't console exclusives most big name Devs shouldn't have a hard time making the tech jump. It should actually be easier, the ps3 cell processor required minute tweaking or else the game may not work at all. The Xb1 faces similar issues for tweaking but nothing that would prove to be a huge speed bump. It's cool to preview games and start building hype that is essentially the point of conferences like E3. But to announce a release date when the game has no hopes of being ready by that time is shitty.
