Science Discussion Series Ep 1: Can humanity expect to have alien contact in the next few millennia?

Rooted in beliefs of antiquity to modern science fiction, the concept of humanity not being the only intelligent species in the universe inspires both awe and fear. In some contexts, alien species represent a more patient, intelligent species that find Humanity's brash existence difficult to cope with. In others, aliens are a conquered, or conquering, race, locked in a largely one-sided struggle for survival. Regardless of the scenario, the discovery of life that originated outside of our rocky planet would be an unprecedented discovery, especially if that life turned out to be intelligent.
I would like the community to discuss whether it is plausible, unlikely, or impossible for Humanity to have contact with an intelligent (communicating) alien species over the next two or three thousand years.

I believe there is a high chance of life out there. But our main concern should be us and our planet. We have problems we're gonna have to solve in the next 50 years in order to preserve all life on this planet.

2 RepliesThe longer we exist the faster we progress. However, the faster we progress in technology, the larger our hurdles become, to a point where progress will be limited even though we've climbed so high. 3000 years is nothing on a galactic scale. While there are many possibilities for goldy locks zone worlds, the distance between them, as well as the time needed to sustain and create life on par with us or beyond us would be enormous. We may find simple life, even in our solar system, but the odds of bumping into an intelligent space faring species that can make the distance between stars seem like a road trip is slim to none. For one thing, if life has anything to show, it's that it's chaotic, and at one point or another every species has been primitive. Today we are still primitive. 1000 years from now we will still be primitive. Every species, especially one that were to exist on a higher level than us to travel between stars like a breeze, would have to overcome it's bestial primitive nature in order to make it that far. So if life ever saw us, it might simply turn the other way so as not to interfere with our progress, or simply out of fear because they know what we would be like based off of their own history. Give it 10,000 years of progress and then, only then, might we stand a chance.

I could bring my smart phone to the 90's, and the similar occurrence could happen. We are not advancing at a steady pace, so why make these predictions? If we start a war, perhaps we could reach that technological state sooner. >.>

6 RepliesWhile technically speaking we are not alone, we know that (as all atoms have only a certain way they can be arranged. So somewhere out there, there is a alternate universe with the atoms arranged exactly how we are). But I don't think that we will be in contact soon, if ever, as space travel without light speed is impossible. And traveling at the speed of light is pretty impossible almost.

It seems like they find more earth-like planets every year (considering aliens even need earth like conditions to survive). It might not be intelligent, but there has to be life out there in the vastness of space.

If it's possible for us to exist, there is absolutely no reason to believe that it is impossible for other life to exist elsewhere in the vast universe.

I somewhat doubt it, just for the mere fact that the universe is infinitely growing, and we are not even a speck on that scale.
