Is this how a community should act?

Is any one else disturbed at the way the community is reacting to the loss of Marty? It's a big deal, it's serious, there's major money at stake... I get it. But it feels like the community is ready to start a riot against Bungie over this. I won't say Bungie has never made a bad decision, but I will say they have never made a quick one. If you believe they fired Marty with no cause you're crazy (and no, Bungie doesn't owe us any details on anything, it's an internal business matter and we're not internal). If you want to break all your Halo discs and merch and then cancel your preorder for Destiny you're acting like a spoiled child. This is the best community in the world, can we act like it please?

  • At the end of the day, it's about the board knowing how their customers feel about what they just did. #Byf-ism Given that we are customers, the only way we can truly speak to that board is with our money along with a statement of why those of us who don't monetarily support the game anymore are not doing so. Breaking discs is merely symbolic, like burning a flag. Let's talk about the substance of these gestures. You only pre-order from a trusted company. If you don't trust their quality control, it isn't in your best interests anymore to invest in an uncertain venture. Pre-orders are investments of confidence. Canceling a pre-order is the same as saying, "I'm not confident that you will deliver a game I want to pay for." If people are willing to do this in response to Marty getting fired, it could generally mean they placed significant value in his contributions enough to be uncertain as to the quality of their experience without it (though this only applies to those unaware that his contributions are already complete for the most part, which, with the slow leak of information discouraging people from paying great attention, is very likely to happen at large scale). As for the rest, the protest is focused on the future of the franchise. I wouldn't say anyone is being a baby here. In fact, canceling a pre-order is going to say more than any petition or letter written to Bungie. Problem is that it ends up looking petty because each single preorder won't make a difference and so, as a single example, one simply appears spiteful and childish in it. This community, greatest or not, is not powerful... especially because it's not unified in its desires and awareness. (I'm not about to cancel my pre-order either, btw.)

  • You make a valid point that we are not "entitled" to any answer, but this is a company that prides itself on clear and considerate communication with its fans. We need to hold them to a higher standard that is, in this day and age, dwindling. By not responding, they are creating undue worry in the community much like the people at Oculus Rift were generating when they failed to communicate properly with their own community. (I don't want to start this argument, just making a company-to-company reference.) If we simply let something like this slide, we are encouraging them to go behind our backs even more. We, the community, do not want this beloved company to become another EA. It is entirely possible, so please do not try and refute it. In the end, companies exist to make money. That being said, many of the most profitable are fueled by their dedicated, loyal followers. I'd rather see our Bungie stay along the path of Valve and Mojang instead of along the trail of EA, or 343i (Microsoft). ((NOTE: Please do not comment on any of the "personal" opinions of mine. If you have a comment not related to Bungie, please direct it towards me in a personal message, not through this comment thread. Thank you if you have read this far.))

  • Honestly there's naught we can do... a bunch of complaining fans will not help Destiny as a community of people. In fact we will hurt ourselves more than we'd hurt the game by complaining. This is undoubtedly a loss, there's no question. I think all we can do is move on... If we keep pressing and remember the incredible experiences that Marty gave us then we can honour him for more than we could by cancelling a few pre-orders and shouting on the forums... Stay strong guys. I think it's what he'd want.

  • I know a lot of people that are upset over this, myself included, but there are different levels of extremes. I'm not about to cancel my preorder or break my halo disks. But I will change my pic to Marty to express solidarity with a man I believe was wronged, and with a community who agrees. I will protest the firing, I will show support for Marty, but I'm not burning buildings, flipping cars, and lighting Molotov cocktails. I don't think the majority of the community is either. They are just hurt and upset over this, and have every right to be. Marty's music has touched a lot of us very deeply and his presence will be sincerely missed. As consumers we have as stake in the Bungie company, we buy their products and thus our opinions DO matter. We have the right, more so, the responsibility to speak up when they do something we disagree with. If some people want to go to the extreme of canceling their Destiny order they can do that too. I won't. I still support Bungie, just not this action. So I'm voicing it. People shouldn't go crazy over this, there is a right and a wrong way to express frustration and anger and I hope that the majority of our lovely community here will be doing it the right way. With respect and care. Don't let mob mentality take over guys and girls, but don't lay down and let a highly disappointing action take place without voicing your opinions either. Freedom of speech is important.

    • The community just thinks bungie is being "activisioned", and destiny will be treated more as a product to create profit instead of a work of art or masterpiece. Give the forum time and this will pass like the countless other "disasters".

      • BEGINNING TRANSMISSION: (Low melodious hum.) Opinion is opinion and this place is riddled with it. It is impossible to ask something to stray from its true nature, but best to listen and turn quietly. ENDING TRANSMISSION:

      •
This is the best community in the world, can we act like it please?
This community is pretty awful, IMO (at least it was after Halo 2, after which I limited my interaction with it). The group here's pretty good, but the community at large is pretty quick to drink any Kool-Aid Bungie sells them and attacks anyone who questions it.

        • I agree with this if not exactly the wording. Ultimatly it's incredibly sad and saying business is business doesn't fill me with smiles either but regardless of my personal feelings on a matter I know absolutely nothing about doesn't change the fact that it is done. we really have to accept it and move on, try to enjoy his all of his work especially what we will hear in Destiny and wish him the best where ever he may go.

          • If it acted any differently I'd question if this was our community.
