World War II’s Strangest Battle: When Americans and Germans Fought Together

Reposted and edited: I fixed up some grammar in this post and I figured I would post it again just because it is so damn interesting!, especially if some haven't seen it yet! Article- http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/05/12/world-war-ii-s-strangest-battle-when-americans-and-germans-fought-together.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+thedailybeast%2Farticles+%28The+Daily+Beast+-+Latest+Articles%29 Book- http://www.amazon.com/The-Last-Battle-German-Soldiers/dp/0306822083 This is quite an interesting read, 8 days after Hitler killed himself (May 5th 1945) soldiers from the U.S. 12th Armored division were ordered to capture a castle in Germany named Schloss (Castle in German) Itter in Tyrol, which housed French VIP prisoners among other things. However a crack unit from the 17th Waffen SS Panzer Grenadier division came back to execute the prisoners and recapture the castle. It gets even more bizarre...it turns out some anti -godwinslaw!- German soldiers (From the Wehrmacht) had also found the castle before and some were even in it, and chose to fight along side the Americans and French prisoners against the SS unit. Thus begins the only battle where the Germans and Americans ever fought together in the entire war (And maybe the only time any of the allies fought with them) , and were still technically on the other side. I will let you all read the rest and find out what happens! It is definitely one of those stories that deserves a movie! This article is based on the book "The Last Battle: When U.S. and German troops Fought together in the waning hours of World War II". Turns out one of my favorite WW2 authors wrote this article so it made it even better. A great read and I encourage everyone to do so as well! As always if your interested in all things World War 2 feel free to follow me or ask me questions!
