The bare facts are simple. Rebello and the intruder, Dalton Smith, died early Friday when the officer fired eight shots, hitting him seven times, with the eighth bullet striking Rebello once in the head, according to county homicide squad Lt. John Azzata.
With a gun pointed at her, Smith "kept saying, 'I'm going to kill her,' and then he pointed the gun at the police officer," according to Azzata.
The would-be robber then made a motion indicating he was about to fire, according to authorities.
The officer acted quickly, saying later that he believed his and Rebello's life were in danger, according to authorities.[/quote]
Right or wrong decision to fire? We all love to be armchair detectives here and pass judgment, so I wonder if Bungie goers think he made the right call.

Based on that information? The moment that the suspect pointed the gun at the officer, that was that. It's a tragedy that the victim died, but the responsibility for the outcome and responsibility for the death of the young woman lies solely on the suspect.

Edited by Mad Max: 5/20/2013 7:07:11 PMWrong decision. Not because it ended with one bullet hitting Rebello, but because the only person who should be making that shot is a sniper, not an officer with a handgun. If Smith and Rebello were so close together that the officer accidentally shot her in the head, he shouldn't have fired at all. edit: i missed the part where he pointed his gun at the officer. Yep. Game over.

This explains it all.

Wrong. Why did he have to fire eight shots?

The moment the suspect aimed his gun at the officer the officer was in the right.

Im interested to see how this guy was positioned, how could he place eight shots on someone holding a woman hostage?

It's tragic, but the officer was only replying with training and self defense... Once the weapon was pointed at him, it was all downhill from there. Terrible circumstances.
