Having an addiction isn't a -blam!-ing choice.

  • Well, for the most part, it is. When you realized that you're addicted, and continue to avoid the problem, then it's a choice.

  • But it shouldnt be an excuse to not do anything about it.

  • That doesn't mean society should have to go out of its way to keep your blubbery ass happy.

  • True, but only the weak minded can not break an addiction.

  • Really? 'Cause I was addicted to narcotics for three years, until one day I just decided to stop buying them. If you really don't want something, you won't go out and get it.

  • Oh, look, another person who thinks their experience is representative of those of all people with addictions. Goody.

  • Last time I checked, real drugs are more addictive than food. Well, scientifically. Psychologically... You may have an inferiority complex that drives you to fill the void left by observing the joy and success of others. This can be put to ease by the release of endorphins (pain), or the literal filling of one's emptiness, the sensation provided when consuming food, the very feeling of food sliding down your gullet, activates the release of hormones from a gland in your brain, which distracts you from the things that make you upset. This is why when you are furious you do not feel like eating, because the hormones produced in a state of anger are create a superiority complex and the need to eat is no longer centre stage. If you feel like you have an inferiority complex, seek therapy. Otherwise, stop being lazy.

It most certainly is a choice to consume addicting substances in quantities great enough to lead to addiction, but that's not relevant to the discussion.

  • No, it's not nearly as black and white as that, it's not like you just flick a switch and BAM you've crossed the addiction line. Addiction develops gradually.

  • While that's true, what HurtfulTurkey said is true as well. For instance, I'm a smoker. I started smoking a couple years ago just as a kind of casual thing, that eventually evolved into a habit, which is now an addiction. It's not nearly as bad as an addiction to heavy drugs, but you get the point. Even now, I could quit. I've quit before, and I could do it again. Remaining to be addicted is a choice.

  • Oh, cool. Maybe you should go share your universal techniques for quitting with the world, so those millions of people who are unable to simply brush off their substance problems can do so. Go on, I'll be waiting for your revolutionary lecture tour to come to my city.

  • It's not easy, but it is simple. It's hard to stop eating so much, it truly is, they have cravings, they are hungry all the time, they get tired easily, but that's all they need to do, it's all just a matter of willpower. I know that if I want to lose weight I need to exercise and eat healthy, but does that mean it's going to be easy? No, but that's ALL I HAVE TO DO, and I just need to make myself do it. It is as simple as flipping a switch, but man it's hard to flip that switch.

  •
it's all just a matter of willpower
No, addiction is a matter of a lot of things, from personality and genetics to simple circumstance. Willpower isn't just something anybody can muster in any circumstance, it's the ability to consciously fight urges, and it can be variously weakened and depleted by a whole array of different conditions.

  • "Willpower isn't just something anybody can muster in any circumstance" You're right, which is what makes it hard. Constantly fighting urges is all willpower bro. Yeah it can be depleted and weakened, which is what makes it hard.

Well my dear peasant, your king has arrived and shall bestow the lands with his great and universal knowledge. Long have the days passed when this land covered in despair, until the arrival of your mighty and just ruler. His light touches the darkest shadows, his justice covers the most unjust, and his sword wields the hearts of us all! Rejoice! I realize it's not as easy for everyone. It's not entirely easy for me either, frankly it's an awful thing to go through. The easy part is realizing that your brain is essentially an asshole who's working against you. All you have to do is ignore the "well maybe I could just have one smoke" thoughts. It's psychological, and as long as you realize that, you will be fine. Now for people with addictions to harder substances that leave them with physical withdraws, that's a different story considering they're going through actual pain. For them, I don't know what to say because I haven't been in their situation. The closest I've been to that is the first day you quit smoking is the worst, because your lungs hurt/have this itching sensation due to them recovering. It goes away quickly with a cigarette, so the temptation to just smoke to get rid of it is ridiculous.

  • I've said nothing contrary to that. I've removed the first paragraph because it's distracting everyone from the actual point of the thread.
