I live in New Jersey and I usually go 5 miles over the limit. The police here do not care as long as you're not higher than that. However there's people that drive way over the limit and tailgate me because "UR NOT GONNA GO FAST ENUFF MAYBE IF IM ON UR ASS U GONNA GO FASTER LOL!"
I may just drive on the limit just to piss them off but if I have to stop short theres a REALLY high chance that I will get rear ended.

As high as you can safely control.

I pretty much go the speed limit everywhere. I can't wrap my head around why anyone would risk a speeding ticket for the little extra 5-10 MPH or so above the limit. Unless you're traveling halfway across the state or something, you really aren't going to get there that much faster. Plus, I enjoy making the people behind me go the speed limit in 2-lane highways. So that's great too.

Edited by huskyguy: 5/9/2013 1:19:35 AMOn back roads I'm not familiar with I'll stick to the speed limit +/- a few mph. On back roads I'm familiar with and know there won't be any cops about what ever I feel like (or whatever the conditions will allow). On main roads I usually accelerate up to the speed limit and press set on the cruise control (unless the speed limit's <40 then I'll forgo the cruise control) and go what ever it decides. On the highway I just go with the flow. Oh and when it comes to tailgaters I slow down until they get the hint.
-
It depends. At a certain point it starts taking an exponential amount of energy to continue accelerating.

Edited by Mega Blaziken: 5/9/2013 1:13:20 AMAcceptable? 15 on highway, 10% in town. Fun? 30+ highway, 30% town, preferably past 2 AM so there's less flow. Also, I play the break and swerve game with tailgaters, you play by turning the wheel enough that you move but not enough that you go over the line, then you watch them freak out over nothing... for the break game, you break lightly enough to turn on your lights, but not enough to actually slow down enough, many lulz ensue.
-
I typically avoid going any more than 5 over the limit. I figure that's pretty safe, and if you see an officer it doesn't take much to slow down to the speed limit. My only exception is on the interstate, in which case you go with the flow of traffic. Otherwise you're just making it more dangerous for other drivers.
-
It really depends on what time it is and where you are. The limit here is 50, but everyone goes an average of 60 kph

Michigan drivers are notoriously fast and furious

It really depends on the location and time of day/month/year. For instance, when I'm home from college I work in the city where in the morning commute if you're not going over 20 MPH above the speed limit, the police will run you over. However, come the afternoon commute, those same police will pull you over. At college, you can get away with around 5 or so above the speed limit at the beginning of the month. However, come the end of the month you can get a ticket for going 1 MPH over. In short, there really isn't an acceptable amount over the speed limit you can go, but if you are going within the margin of error of the speed limit, then you certainly can fight a ticket better.

Autobahn master race.

When people tailgate me, I drop my speed by 5 mph for every five seconds they stay too close, and 10 mph for every time they honk at me. My favorite was when I was on a two lane road with no passing allowed, the speed limit was 35, and I was going 15 because some jackass was tailgating.
-
I try to remain at the exact speed limit, frequently fluctuating to as much as 5 mph above. But I feel like a horrible person if I go any faster.

Police can SOMETIMES be lenient and will allow a +10% speed, so doing 33 in a 30 zone they likely won't pull you over. 40 in a 30 is another matter though. Typically if a road has a limit of 30 and there are others on it, I will go with the flow of traffic, which may be above the limit. If no-one else is there, 35. On the motorway and dual carriageways with the national limit (70mph), I tend to do up to 90mph, again just going with traffic. Typically I just sit there at 80mph. Braking distances be damned, the stats we're taught to remember are for a car from the 1960s. I drive a Golf with four disc brakes and ABS. I doubt my car needs even remotely the same distance to stop.
-
i'd say 5 or 6 is reasonable.

Edited by I Senor Skwid I: 5/9/2013 12:42:55 AMDepends. Normally I drive 7-10MPH over the speed limit on four lanes (PA State Limit is 65MPH), 3-7MPH on highways outside of towns, and around 4MPH over in towns. If I'm not in a hurry or just want to relax, I drive the speed limit.
-
If there are little to no cars on the road: 10mph over (though on highways in Texas that means 95mph on some of the highways with n 85mph limit) Usually if there is a good amount of cars on the road I'll just keep up with them
-
I try to stay within 5. Cops in my area will start pulling you over if you exceed 10.
-
I usually go about 10 over or less, I once had some guy get pissed at me cause I was going too slow, I was going 55 on a 35 (I didn't know it was 35 at first.)
-
10-15 mph over is acceptable.
-
-
I average about 2 on either side of it in cities (yes, I sometimes go slower than the speed limit when I'm not in a hurry), and about 1-2 over on the highway.
-
Tailgating is for morons but at the same time, you're a human being and perfectly capable of making an assessment of whether it's safe to go over the limit, as you state yourself. I don't see a problem with it, there's a road near me that has a limit of 30, I'm often down it at 60 because it's clear and straight.
-
My mom taught me that there is an allowable cushion of plus or minus five mph, so I'll stick to that. Except in Maryland.

I brake checked a guy today myself actually. He was a pussy and rolled up next to me and said, "excuse me, was that for me?" I just said, "don't tailgate people" and he genuinely looked confused. I hate bad drivers.
