Super Smash Bros 4 Discussion

(note that the image above is just fan art) So it's all but trailer-confirmed that Super Smash Bros 4 will be coming to the Wii U and 3DS within the next couple of years. Not much else is set in stone at this point, but I'm sure most of us know what to expect. There will be a few new items, several new characters, a library of new stages and plenty of old favorites to boot. We can assume they'll be bringing back the Multi-Man battles, Stage Builder, Screenshot/Cinema combo, Trophy viewer, and all of the other things we've come to love from the past games. We could even get a more story-driven single player this time, or perhaps they'll do away with it and focus solely on Multiplayer. But even with those things, SSB4 will still play the same as Brawl and Melee unless they add something to actually enhance combat. What would you guys like to see in Super Smash Bros 4?

  • As long as it's more like Melee and less like Brawl, I'll be happy.

  • Hopefully it'll play like Melee, Brawl just wasn't that fun for me and melee is one of my favorite games of all time (Ganondorf master race). As for a title, Super Smash Bros. Onslaught would be cool.

  • I want tripping removed, stupid mechanic imo. Better netcode for the online. More characters, less clones. Improve upon current characters. Newcomers I hope to see
Shulk - Xenoblade Palutena and Magnus - Kid Icarus Lucina and Chrom - Fire Emblem Gen VI representative - Pokemon Ghirahim OR Skullkid - Legend of Zelda Ridley - Metroid Waluigi - Mario
• I want to see some of the exlusive third party characters Nintendo has. Commander Video for one(all but the latest Bit.Trip are exclusive I believe). Ghirahim would also be nice. Gameplay wise, not too much they could do there I imagine, although I would prefer less outrageous final smashes if they return(Sonic, Ness/Lucas, Fox/Falco/Wolf anyone?).

      • As long as it allows the traditional offline CPU play as all smash bros games before have and is finally in HD I will be happy.

      • I think a character from the Fire Emblem DS game will appear. I also think there will be a secondary character from Kid Icarus. I'd like to see Ghirahim from Skyward Sword as a playable character. I really hope they add at least 8 new characters, plus a few larger stages. It would be epic if it supported 5 players on Wii U. All I know is I'll have to invest in a few pro controllers because I doubt anyone will want to use a wii-mote to play.

      • I wonder if they will have weekly updates like they did with Brawl. I really enjoyed those, I really got into following the development of videogames on the internet back then, checking in on Fridays for the Bungie Weekly Update, and Mondays for the Brawl Update. Guess which of those two games was good enough to get me invested in the community? Yeah... I really hope they don't mess up as much as they did with Brawl.

        • My personal "These Characters are Long Overdue," list: Simon Belmont, Conker, Banjo and partner, Oni Link, Ryu, someone from Street Fighter 2, Lanky or Chunky or Funky Kong.

        • For new characters, I'd love to see Chrom (I imagine he will be there, anyways). Lucina would be cool too, but three Fire Emblem characters (obviously Marth would still be there) might be pushing it.

The sad thing is that I LOVED Nintendo. I had an SNES when I was young, then the 64, then the Gamecube. But I just can't bring myself to buy a Wii (or Wii U) because of the motion sensing and with the U this weird controller that it now uses. I can't rationalize spending several hundred dollars on a system that I will only use for a few games, Smash bros, whatever Zelda game comes out(especially if the Zelda games will focus so heavily on the motion sensing) , and maybe a couple of others. On the topic of smash bros, Link FTW.

Characters: I'd like them to put Roy and Young Link back in(Toon link....is just.......ugh). Get rid of Wolf and replace him with Krystal from Star Fox or just add her in(another female character since there aren't many, and let her use her staff which would give a starfox character a new fighting style). change Ganondorf's moveset so he doesn't have so many powerful air moves that cause knockback. I'm sick of fighting someone who is nearly as strong as Bowser, but nowhere near as slow. He just has too many moves that stop or one-hit-kill players. Also a MUST: Give ALL characters a strong Meteor smash. It's a bit unfair to give Fox a move that mainly does small amounts of damage, then give Falco the same move but make his move a meteor smash. Plus it gives those characters an edge over others. It would definitely make being on the edge of a level more dangerous. I don't care much for third-party characters, and I'm not as big of a fan of Snake as I used to be. I went back to play Brawl, and he just didn't seem to mesh well, so take him out. Not much else for characters except, make Bowser look more like he did in Melee. He looked the best in that game(not graphically, but by design). Stickers: Get rid of them. Never used 'em. Trophies: Keep them, and add more, but include the classic games more. In Melee you had trophies like Majora's Mask, and trophies of classic characters like balloon fighter. Then in Brawl you had mainly recent game trophies, very few classics. Mechanics: Remove tripping, please, just do it. Give the game a Brawl look(better graphics and cooler character designs), but melee physics and gameplay. It was less floaty, and quicker paced than Brawl. Story: Subspace Emissary was alright. Cutscenes were cool, levels and gameplay just don't seem to fit Smash Bros. well. Maybe make a story mode like Brawl's(with awesome cutscenes and story) but no crazy levels. Melee had cool looking levels, but they were WAY too short(make them longer and mix in story elements). Items: I'm really getting tired of the Dragoon, I wouldn't miss it. It's nice to get an item and be able to immediately use it, not have to fight for 3 pieces to use an item. Remove items like bananas, and give the Super Scope back it's ability to shoot THROUGH players so you can catch all 3 in your shots(can't remember if that happens in Brawl). Revert the beam sword back to it's Melee form. That's all I can think of right now.

          • I'd like to see Dante from DMC as a playable character. He was a fun character in Viewtiful Joe. I hope they have another story mode. A sweet side-scroller that's also a mashup of great games that also allows me to spawn-on-my-bro co-op style? Sign me up. They could integrate the community more: with maps, gametypes, films, pics like Reach.

              • I just want to mod again! For Brawl, all you needed was a SD card. Mini-Giga Bowser, transforming into Giga Bowser with d-pad, restoring DJC for Yoshi, fireball special for Yoshi, super Capt. Falcon. Man that kept me playing for weeks!

              • I'd like to see the Awakening version of Marth, Pac-Man (It's Namco-Bandai making this, so this may just happen), The Chosen Undead (Unlikely, but I can dream, damnit), Chrom, Waluigi, Tingle (the sexiest mother-blam!-er alive), etc.

Does the Wii U use the friend code thing or is it more like matchmaking now? Because matchmaking in a new Smash Bros would be awesome.

This won't fix your "tier" problem at all. All this does is expand the number of effective characters. Instead of tiers looking like
S-Meta Knight A-Falco, Blah blah blah
It'd be something like
S - Jiggly with Extra Weight, Meta Knight with Speed, Etc A - Blah blah blah
Some games have tried this before. Soul Calibur II and IV had "special" modes with special weapon attributes (and in the case of IV, RPG-like customization). However neither of these saw any use in the competitive scene, or even much popularity among regular players. /Directly Relevant Reply To be frank, I don't think the "tier problem" is even worth addressing because it's not real. As you mentioned, tiers are based on meta performance, but that's with the assuming both players are playing their characters at the current highest skill ceiling. That's a very important detail. For pretty much all players the tier list isn't relevant. Casual players will never maximize their characters potential, while the top players are themselves reinventing and refining the meta. If people play under the illusion that tier lists are law, then that's their own problem. They're going to miss out on sleeper-power-characters and they'll only put themselves at a disadvantage. Example? Evo2k11's BlazBlue series was won by a player on Hakumen, a C-Tier character who beat out multiple other players playing Noel, an S-Tier character. There are of course the cases where a character is clearly overpowered like Akuma in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo or clearly underpowered like Dampierre in Soul Calibur V, but such characters are typically pretty obvious. tl;dr Tier lists are not guidelines for picking characters. It's more accurate to say that they can be thought of as a general reflection of a game's competitive scene.

How would Stickers eliminate tiers? Wouldn't you simply put stickers on the god tier characters and they would still out perform lower tier characters? I'm just having problems imagining a character that is so flawed in a single department that simple stickers would be enough to push it's power level up and over the top against characters who have a similar opportunity for the same upgrade. All Nintendo needs to do is add Banjo and Kazooie and Bomberman and it will be GotY.[/fanboy]

I am really excited for E3 because of so many games but I must say the next smash bros is at the top for me.
