Priority Tagging / Priority Sort

First, I'd like to thank App L Sawz for the inspiration for this thread. To start, App's initial point was thus: People are using multiple official/popular hashtags (#gaming, #bungie, #offtopic, #Flood, #Comunity, Etc.) all in the same thread instead of trying to differentiate. This is causing a search under #gaming to yield the same results as #community despite very different posts. App's suggested response is smart: Add Categories or rather force a specific "official tag" upon the post. Running with this idea, what if a tag could be set with priority. Currently we can sort the forum under a given tag by latest, popularity, and debated. What if another sorting parameter, priority, was added? What do I mean by this? If you check one hashtag as prioritized, it will make the topic be sorted higher than the other hashtags in a given sort. So, if I search #gaming and hit priority sort, those threads with #gaming prioritized will come to the top. If my thread contains #gaming, but is prioritized under #community, it won't appear under a priority search (or it could appear but just not at the top of the list). Allowing for only one prioritized sorting tag would be imperative in this situation. This would allow for the current system of multiple tags (including official tags) while simultaneously allowing for the return of a more structured subforum system (in my opinion). Obviously you'll still see people misuse the priority tagging, but thats just going to come with the territory of #hashtags.

    • I would very much like for certain tags to be forced upon users. Good thread! :-)

    • This is an interesting idea. It sounds like it would be hard to implement from a coding perspective.

      • While I like your idea, I don't think it's ideal for a few reasons. One being that it adds a layer of complexity to a feature that's already adding a layer of complexity. The original system of sub-forums was explicitly clear and universal. There was a place and only one place for distinct specified subjects. The tagging only system burdens the user with two new responsibilities. First to understand the tags that the community uses, and second to enter the appropriate tags accurately. Before, it was a simple question of "Which of these few universal categories does the subject of my post most correlate to?" This question was simpler to answer and easier to carry out. Your idea burdens the user with another responsibility–to accurately tag their topic with a single most important yet unspecified thing. This is why I prefer the idea of mandated universal categories that are all at once visible when selecting. Your idea also dosen't remove the problem of multiple tags for the same thing, like #Flood and #TheFlood, and I don't think I have to go too much into why that is problematic. It makes it very hard to navigate the forum in an organized way. I prefer the idea of categories/sub-forums. To preserve that sense of community that some attributes of this system offers, they could: • keep a main page that ignores sub-forums and shows all posts made on the site • keep the sub-forums very condensed in number (ex. just three to five) • continue to use tags and filtering by tag largely ignores sub-forums • show all sub-forums at all times on the side bar above the "Followed Tags" for easy navigation

        • I am all for this idea. It sounds like a great plan to help keep the forums segregated, yet unified all at once.

I'm okay with hashtags within subforums. This doesn't seem like a bad idea though.

          • I think this idea would help a lot with finding threads the user wants, while at the same time leaving everything tagged to still be viewable. At this point, the tagging system is still incredibly new. A system such as this could definitely help point this feature in a more organized direction.

          • Yes, this idea would help out so much. The only downside is it brings back a little of what I believe Achronos was trying to eliminate, which is the separation of groups in the forums. On the old layout you had Community folks, Universe folks, Floodians, etc. and they generally kept to themselves while shunning newcomers at times. It wasn't very friendly. An additional proposal to your suggestion would be that Ninjas such as yourself could be allowed to enforce appropriate tagging when necessary, so someone making a thread about cats doesn't add #gaming, #community, etc. I would imagine that this could be quite difficult, but if it is possible, it would help. Of course, the best thing that could happen is that people start using the tagging system the correct way.

I think we should go even farther than what you suggest, Raven. I would like certain tags to be considered "key tags" or "official tags," which would work a little differently than regular tags. They would include things like #community / #septagon, #universe / #bungieuniverse, #offtopic / #theflood, #destiny, and #feedback. These "official tags" could not be used with everything and anything. For example, it would be impossible to post something as both #offtopic AND #community, or #offtopic AND #myth. Common sense should tell people not to do this, but happening and rampantly. Another example - all of the Bungie game tags (e.g. #Halo #Marathon #weekendwarrior) could be tagged with #universe, but not with #community. Basically...what I really want are two things: 1) Let me separate all Bungie content (even if just loosely connected) from all non-Bungie content (aka anything that could only have gone in the flood) 2) Give me a way to filter Bungie content in the forums with efficiency (being able to search/filter more than one tag at a time would help here) The only way I can think of achieving those two things are through forum categories or hashtag control.

I do like your suggestion (I clicked the button), but that wouldn't alleviate the problem when you sorted by other things. Say you were looking at #Community. You'd like to see the most popular #Community things. You click sort by most popular, click on a bunch of stuff, read, post, whatever, then you move on to #Flood. You'd, once again, like to see the most popular. You click sort by most popular and you see all the same threads you just looked at. The thing is, if it is a Community post, it probably shouldn't be posted as off-topic. That's just kinda' the way it is, right? Your suggestion is getting us somewhere, but it doesn't quite do what I think we both want it to.
