I use people I know because I like to try and get them right. I like to make the characters act the way I think the real person would act in a given situation. Now, granted, I don't do a great job of it and some of the characters may seem bland and pretty much the same, but that's what I like to do. If you'll notice, I'm actually adding a few new characters. Splitt is playing a more prominent role in this one, even though I doubt anyone knows him. Heck, I don't even know him. Dragon Eyes has made her first major debut in one of my stories. It's not as if I'm trying to make this exclusive to certain people, I'm just trying to make it work in the best way possible.
