HDTV Splitscreen problem! 4:3 Aspect ratio??!?!?!

As some of you know, I recieved my Halo 3 copy today from the Pontiac contest. I have been playing campaign fine by myself for about an hour. My brother just got here and we went in to do some splitscreen co-op campaign, and bam... Theres black bars on the left and right side of the screen! I tried going through every setting, reading the manual, checked my Xbox360 settings but it wont change! Any suggestions (or anyone else with their copy confirm this issue?) Thanks.

 • We got one official but very cocky response. I hope Bungie is gonna give us more. Just keep bumping this post and tell others to do the same. A huge outcry from the community cannot be ignored. This needs to be fixed asap.

 • I understand why bungie did this, but the current split screen layout looks crap on my 55" Bravia. They should release a patch with: 1) The option to stretch the image (preserving aspect ratio). 2) The option for a verticle split. Apart from that, I think we're all agreed that this game is friggin awesome! p.s. I dont understand the gripe about screen burn in, firstly - how can black bars cause burn in? (to my understanding, burn-in is caused by a constant image/colour being projected on the same area of screen and black is not a colour/image, but rather the absense of one.) Secondly - How is bungie responsible for your bad hardware choice? [Edited on 09.28.2007 1:15 AM PDT]

 • Hopefully Bungie can make a downloadable update to fix this gripe. It is very, very annoying. Especially, when I invited friends over and they got really annoyed as well. If it doesn't get fixed I might never play split screen again and just wait until COD4 releases to enjoy a full 16:9 aspect splt screen game. Other than that, it is a very enjoyable game. Campaign and online multiplayer are very fun.

 • This is seriously stupid, why would people with 16:9 screens want horisontal split screen in the first place? It's far more beneficial to split the screen vertically. Halo 2 had it, why the hell not Halo 3???

 • You know, I'd really like for some authority figure from Bungie to tell me exactly what is being done to prevent screen burn in?

 • I just bought a Halo 3 Xbox 360 and I am having the same problem. It's fine until I do split screen, then bars appear on the left and right side. The responses I'm hearing are all crap, since I also have a regular 360 and when I play Halo 3 on that one there is no black bars on the sides during split screen. My TV is 32" widescreen and no other game has this problem. Now, if I switch my resolution to the lowest setting it's fine on split screen. But then all my other games have black bars on the top and bottom. It would make sense that they just didn't convert it for Halo 3, except that it does not do it to my regular 360. Does anyone know how to fix this problem, or did they make the Halo 3 360 play Halo 3 in a lower setting? If that is true, I want my money back on the new system.

 • sticky this. i hate this bungie. i hate it how i have a 65 inch hd tv. and when i play coop or multiplayer splitscreen it makes the screen size 4:3 i think this is rediculus. my friends comeover and expect a lot from this game and they are like WTF is this crap. so its really small i paid 70 dollars for a game that cuts my screen in half, i am really dissapointed bungie.... =[[[[

 • This is simply retarded. I have a 60in 1080p TV and there are 2 huge black bars on the sides. Its simply stupid. Not to mention it looks like -blam!-. I mean the GFX are bad enough, but this is horrendous.

 •
Posted by: Achronos In split screen, the game maintains aspect ratio and viewport first. The alternatives were vertical split or altering the viewport (both distort the view). Both of those solutions suck. It isn't "Unforgivable." It is the best solution to the problem. The alternatives have poor visual quality and don't meet our standards. It isn't a matter of "figuring it out" it is a matter of having a set specification for how we want you to see the world in the game, and sticking to it. So, not a bug. By design.
Posted by: tetzloff i am not trying to be a jerk. i just spent 70 something dollars on a game that isnt in 16x9 when there are no hardware limitations. halo3 xbox 360 and everything. and the above post reply was a scapegoat answer. should we not expect the game to be cutting edge (which 16x9 is not) or at least "EQUAL" to every other multiplayer game on the system. i think so.. i dont have a small screen.. my plasma is 42". how do you explain gears of war being in full 16x9, they were obviously able to figure it out? this problem exists on halo3 and if left unfixed is unforgivable. if anyone does have any links to any confirmation by bungie on this (past or present articles) I would certainly entertain them.. thanks in advance.

Well, sure, if you say so. All I know is that ever single other 360 game I have, works wonderfully in full screen split-screen, and yet Halo 3 can't manage? Seems rather odd to me. I dunno, between not wanting to "fix" this issue, and not "fixing" the lack of a custom game search function, you guys seem to be getting REAL sloppy, or just freaking stubborn. Make your pick.

 • Why can't they just put the option back in to split the screen vertically like Halo 2 had? I'm fully aware that this changes the FOV... but who cares? You KNOW that you're getting a disadvantaged screen when you play coop... but you don't care because you're playing coop!

 •
Posted by: proXzee Do you still not understand. That defeats the entire point of playing Halo 3 on an HDTV. if I wanted to play in 480P I wouldn't have purchased an HDTV.
I completely agree... but it would seem that bungie have already decided to defeat the purpose of our purchasing an HDTV since they're forcing us to use 4:3 (when "all" HDTV's are 16:9). Whether you then make your TV stretch it to fit or put up with the bars is irrelevant... the wasted res has already been decided (unless they release an update)

 • Oh, I fully agree. However, I'd be shocked if you didn't agree that playing on a lower resolution beats the crappy 4:3 ratio. I still can't really wrap my brain around what the deal is....it just doesn't seem like Bungie would do this on purpose. But then, I really can't comprehend why they didn't use AA either. I bought a brand new top of the line $2k+hd tv for Halo3............but to be honest, it seems like I didn't really need to. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with all the hard work Bungie has put in for us. But there are just some glaring issues that have me scratching my head over.....

 •
Posted by: MadroKurgan It's not really a big problem, like most have said the reason is because it keeps the same aspect ratio and FOV as single screen. That being said, who cares if the aspect ratio and FOV is increased in split-screen. So what if people with split screen have more horizontal FOV. Halo 1 did in in split-screen, and it was great. In general playing games in split-screen sucks, so having more FOV and a greater aspect ratio is a great trade-off, and makes split-screen fun/worthwhile/managable. I say increase the screen size for split-screen.
I totally agree

 •
Posted by: Jumbo McNasty
Posted by: jordan15b this thread is still here? the ratio is like that for a reason
Sometimes I wonder if people even read before they post? Other threads keep popping up around this one with the SAME QUESTION and COMPLAINT WE ALL KNOW this is their reason - and understand why. MOST PEOPLE don't like it seems. Deal with it. Also take into account the huge amount of people who'll never post to this board..................................
I'm hoping after enogh post bungie will figure out that ALOT of people don't like the 4x3 resolution and will at least give an option to those who want their HDTV to be used to it's fullest

 •
Posted by: SAVEQTF This thread should have stopped there, and frankly, thats where i stopped reading. He is absolutely correct, as is Protunus ^ right there. If the black bars were deleted, then you would either get: A: A FOV (field of view for you noobs) that is way to large, and in fact, might make people motion sick. If you don't believe me, Google search FOV motion sickness or something like that. or B: A super stretched image. This would just look stupid, I can't believe some people can't grasp this concept Anyone in the arts (fine art, photo, film) can tell you why certain aspect ratios are better than others. Most will argue to you that 4:3 is in fact better. Bungie was right in doing this. Even if they made it vertical split like Halo 2, it would still suck. Playing with that low of a FOV just plain sucked.
Just because all you fools can't think of other ways to fill the screen, doesn't mean that there isn't a correct way to do it. I've posted multiple times already that cropping a 16:9 image down to 1/2 height by removing the top/bottom would result in split-screen play that does NOT change the FOV (vertical FOV would be reduced for the split-screen players, horizontal remains identical - no advantage is given to split-screen players) and does NOT stretch the image. I was also doing some thinking about this - and the way it currently does split-screen does NOT give each player a 16:9 screen. To give each player a 16:9 view, you'd have 1/2 of the total screen space taken up by the black bars on the sides, which is obviously not whats happening. Instead we have a 4:3 image thats split in 1/2 - so each player is getting a 4:1.5 (or 8:3, or 24:9) aspect screen to play in. And finally - Bungie calling this method of split-screen cool doesn't make it so. Just like MS calling Vista the best OS ever doesn't make it worth running. We've got a load of users complaining about it, a few users flaming those users telling them incorrect reasons why it is the way it is / telling them to live with it, and I don't think I've seen a single user actually happy about playing split-screen with black bars.

 • So, here is a bit of info. I thought this was all some weird mistake so I was playing with my settings and found that if I set my tv to 480p "standard" as opposed to 1080p "widescreen" the splitscreen displays correctly.....no stretching, no black bars, etc. This is the same setting I play halo CE on. Tv is a Sony 46" hdtv Bravia if that helps. Some of you with the Bravia tv's should try that setting and it should fix the problem. Giving up a little resolution is waaaaay better than 4:3 ratio splitscreen. It makes me wonder if its some settings glitch....I know people are claiming that bungie did it to preserve ar but that just doesn't make sense.

 • Ok...I'm not trying to be an ass But ok....people have said...hey it was like this in the beta! OK, I wasn't in the beta... So I searched "black bars" in the forum search. Now I think these threads are gone forever but you can read snippets... PEOPLE WERE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS IS MAY. image burn, people not liking it, change it back!!! It's all there!!! Have a look! That thought this feature was "cool" but even then people didn't like it.
