DEFCON (suggestion)

We all know why, no need to talk much more about that. I am noticing that many of the fan sites are encountering a growing problem with spoiler posts on their forums. For example, HBO is considering the drastic step of closing their forums until post release, solely because of the spoiler risk. B.net may be "somewhat" resistant to that as Bungie has a bigger stick than fan sites. Bungie can blacklist and affect a spoiler's ability to use/enjoy the XBL aspect of H2. While a good stick, I am concerned that it may not be sufficient. If the threat of spoilers and other nonsense becomes more real, I would suggest this as a potential course of action. All accounts created on or after the date of the "leak" are unable to post in the Forums. Accounts whose creation pre-dates the leak can post. All new members would need to have the reason for this explained, but I do think that they should be able to understand that it is to protect their and everyone's potential enjoyment of the campaign mode. This would also have the side effect becoming more comprehensive as time goes on. If someone with an older account does post a spoiler, and are blacklisted, they cannot "respawn" a new account and resume their activities. This is a drastic step, is only a suggestion, and as a true fan I despise the idea of restricting anyone's enjoyment of the fan community. But, I am unable to see a solution that allows us to continue without the risk of someone posting something that ruins my (and many other fans) 3 years of anticipation. Please feel free to add your comments or suggestions. Thank you all.

 • While that does work, the best defence is to stay out of New Mombasa.

 • here is my method that i've used for avoiding spoilers on b.net forums. if i'm unsure of a topic i either: 1) don't click on it 2) click on it and skip reading the main post. instead reading replies further down the page. if it was a spoiler you can tell pretty quick by other people's reactions.

 • i had suggested to stosh that they should make linking your XBL gamertag a part of the registration process for new members. that way, if you muck around and get banned, there is a definite consequence. anyways, it sounded like this would take too much time to implement. EDIT: oh, and we came up with an idea for another forum, too. it'll be called "Halo 2 Spoilerz!!! Post links to pics, vids here!!!" the only post will be a sticky that has a link, that when pressed, permabans the user. any attempt to post, auto-permabans the user. • I suggest, a few days or a week before halo 2 comes out, making a perma sticky (permanent sticky) especially for halo 2 spoilers, that has been ultra modified, so the the subject line in the forums, is twice the size as the others. This way, new members could easily pick it out from the rest of the posts and hopefully do the right thing. The way they handled the ILB and now Halo2.com things was actually pretty good too. That's why i think this plan might work. I've never seen a thread fill up past 1000 posts so fast. I think if people can do that for halo 2 as well, it might be just that little bit safer. Also, I think it's just a matter of knowledge. I doubt some of these new members even know what a spoiler means. Maybe if we use some more 'easier' words instead of words like 'spoiler', we might have more luck. I don't know of any synonyms for that word in particular, but i'm sure that we might find some in the next two weeks. A forum lockdown though, would give mods a chance to play the game. But it would deter new members from comeing in. And the bungie fan base, as stated before, is ever growing. I sware there are at least 50 new members a day here. Some who've been here for about a week, or some who've been here for more than a year, but only joined recently. And no doubt, that theres gona be a bungie.net link somewhere in the game weather it be the credits, or the main menu which would bring them here. But who wants to join something, if it's not doing anything? And finally, just as a random suggestion for mods, if the place doesn't go into lockdown, I would like to see a 'Donate to Bungie/Mods' or a 'Tips' button somewhere on the page. I would donate for sure. Mods deserve to get paid. They do a lot of work, and sacrifice there eyes to all the coughbull-blam!-cough that goes on in the forums, and I see it as the least we can do to repay them. Or at least so they can buy some sorta drug so they forget all about the spoilers that they read. edit - this post was suppost to be short =/ heh. [Edited on 10/19/2004 3:26:03 AM]

 • I'm not worried at all anymore about "spoilers" in new Mombasa anymore. Everything that I've read has been either something that I already knew anyway or an obvious lie. There still isn't anything really worth talking about in there though.

 •
Posted by: halo beast Baerdog, I don't know how you and all the other PC gamers do it. If I were you, I would run out and pick up an XBOX right now. If you come back to the forums after Halo 2, the plot and all the secrets that have been kept secret for years will probably be ruined for you once you return. There are going to be tons of members that are going to reveal all their stories about how awesome the game was and their favorite things that happened. I'm sure Halo 2 PC will eventually come out, but will it have been worth it by then? It could possibly turn out dissapointing like Halo PC.
Really? I enjoy Halo PC. I actually like the keyboard and mouse better than the XBox controller. As for how I do it: I just remind myself that if it comes out on XBox, it will eventually come out on PC. That has happened with the three games that I wanted for XBox and those games were Halo, KOTOR, and Morrowind (got both expansions and the original game in the GotY edition). As for after Halo 2 comes out, I may have to take a sabbatical for a while. If I don't do that then it looks like I'll be surfing the forums through squinted eyes for a while. I really don't think it will be too hard as I never go into New Mombasa anyway and all of the threads in the other forums will probably have subject lines that say "OMFG CAN U BELIVE HOW HALO@ ENDED????/??!!!1!!!" And if worst comes to worst, I've got friends with XBoxes that I could play Halo 2 on if I need to. If something really bad happens and Halo 2 doesn't come out for PC then I'll just have to save up for an XBox now won't I? -Baerdog7

 • Wow, my Internet's down for a few days and people are talking about shutting down the forums. I am really sorry for everyone (including mods) who have had Halo 2 plot points ruined for them. I, for one, haven't been able to spend much time on the forums since the leak and haven't had anything ruined for me. However, those of you with XBoxes should consider themselves lucky. I don't have an XBox. I will be ducking from spoilers for months, probably years, before Bungie released Halo 2 for PC (if ever). I am fervently hoping that they will release it for PC and Mac as they haven't let down that audience yet. I am all for a shutdown of the forums for several weeks prior to and after the release. Until then, I'm gonna start digging my foxhole and prepare for the long haul of avoiding spoilers. -Baerdog7

 • Even though this is not a poll if they were to shut the forums (aside from the groups) to prevent spoilers I would be in favour. Bungie could still keep all the other site information up like news, updates, etc. That (I hope) would keep new and old members busy until the release date. And maybe by posting some sort of explaination as to why the main forums are off limits they would lessen the impact of shutting them down. I -blam!- hate thieves :(

 • I only want to know 2 things: which, if any, old maps are back (so far all I know is -CENSORED-) how many new guns -- and I can wait a few weeks for that! jeez... jerks.

 • It is a very sad thing for those of you who have had the game spoiled, especially to the moderators who must walk through the mindfield of New Mombasa. Fortunatly, I haven't come across any spoilers, and hope that I don't see anything until the game is in my X-Box. I do agree though that we should shut down the forums and take a break from all this crap if it is still necesarry. But if you don't want the game spoiled, I suggest you stay out of New Mombasa, and do not look at anything that even sounds Halo related.

 • I'm lucky. The only problem that I've had so far is that I'm torn between wanting to hear details about the game and not wanting anything major to be spoiled. It's kinda hard to only find stuff like how many levels there are in single player, or how many guns there are without the names... Lol, so far the not wanting it spoiled has been winning.

 • I think the only real end is with the game's final release. Even with exhaustive and drastic measures taken to prevent spoilers and such, it will still happen. In the few moments between a topics creation and closure...someone can always see it, and become tainted. Sorry...no suggestions from me. Just the grim tru7h. However I am in favor of the suggested shutdown. It's only fair. ...And I've already had more than one major plot point ruined for me, so anyone who's been affected, you're not alone. • My apologies. I never wanted and never suggested a shutdown of the Forums. I did say that if Bungie decided on that course of action, that I would understand and support it. I am only a fan and hope that my suggestions showed that my concerns were for the community. Making suggestions to solve problems is what I do for a living. I think that I forgot that my work is my work and while I am here, I am just a fan and should not try to "problem solve" in areas that are not my responsibility. I am sorry if my topic or ideas have caused unrest or other difficulties. If I were for the shutdown of the forums, I would simply take a hiatus and in a single stroke make myself "spoiler-proof". In addition to my own personal concerns, I was trying to come up with a suggestion or idea that would help both the new and unaware members as well as those of us that have been around for a while. The mods and Bungie themselves are very aware of the situation, and they (probably more than we fans) do not want us to be "spoiled". After all it is their story! As for myself, I will do what is asked of me, as of this time, "remain calm, report naughty topics, and don’t respond to spammers, flamers, trolls, pirates or spoilers..." I think that I can do that. I can only marvel and congratulate the response that the community has made for the call to respond on behalf of Bungie. I am proud to be a member of this community and proud that we fans are as devoted to the object of our obsession as we are. A tip of the helmet and a Jjaro neural uplink chip to all of you.

 • I too, am in favor of complete shutdown, except for the groups. The forums have been quite devoid of intelligent life anyway, lately, and it's doing me no good staying around. I do, because I'm hooked. I, luckily, haven't had anything ruined for me. Yet. I'd rather keep it this way, or else I am going to have to leave as well. I do NOT want this game to be ruined for me. New members would come back after they play Halo 2, trust me. So that, in my opinion, is not a problem. [Edited on 10/17/2004 1:23:47 PM]

 • I'm not here to disagree but the developers role is a little more important in this case than a fan site, so completely shutting down forums might actually BACKFIRE against new people to the world of Bungie. Just food for though.
