Marathon 2: Durandal Video walkthrough-ish thingy [COMPLETED]

Well, the old adage goes that a picture is worth a thousand words. So I was thinking about doing some movies of Durandal to help people out. So how much is a movie worth? Recon's mum says hers are worth $19.99 for each vid with a option to cancel at any time. I think I'll make my walk through vids for free... Alright, I know that Durandal can be a little confusing sometimes, and it's easy to get lost amongst the bright shiny Marathon goodness. So while I was playing today, I took the time to record everything. Typically the vids only show the quickest ways to get through the levels. They are by NO means complete walk-throughs. However, if you happen to get stuck on a certain part, come to this thread and download the chapter you need help with and maybe you'll find what you need. **WARNING** **WARNING** **WARNING** The videos you are about to download contain large amounts of WIN, you've been warned! Well as some of you may know that Mythica, the site I was using to host these videos went down a few months ago. So while I was at PAX this past weekend I ran into Louis Wu of Halo.Bungie.Org fame and asked about if he was able to salvage them before Mythica went under. He said he did, and so here they are!!! All links should work 100% fine now. If you get a problem, feel free to post in the thread and I'll see what's going on. I downloaded the 1st and Last vid and both worked fine so I'm hoping the rest are the same. "You don't think I'm sarcastic, do you? Nevermind." ~B.B. [Edited on 09.03.2008 12:23 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: Ruben Clones I can't even explain the feeling I get while playing, I wouldn't call it motion sickness or even queasy, I haven't actually felt physically sick from playing. It's just a very unsettling feeling which leaves me feeling quite uncomfortable, so much so that I need to step off.
How close do you sit to your TV or monitor? You're probably experiencing "reverse motion sickness." Your body receives its postural input from several sources. With motion sickness we only need to worry about two of them, your visual signals, and everything else (The proprioceptive and vestibular). In normal motion sickness you become ill because you have a fixed horizon, but your body is in motion. Your brain gets confused as to why the different senses are conflicting and starts stimulating pathways that induce nausea/vomiting/vertigo as a side effect in order to resolve that conflict. With "reverse motion sickness" your position is fixed, but your horizon is moving. The same internal conflict arises and you'll start to feel sick. If you are sitting to close to a TV or monitor so that the only horizon you see is a screen that is always in motion, your brain will think that you're in motion, however you're not. Try backing up some, so that more of the room is in your field of vision. I had the same problem when I first started doing laproscopy. I would get very dizzy and would have to look away to settle it down. I found moving the monitors back a foot or so stopped all of that.

 •
Posted by: Ruben Clones I'll have to look into the gun bob tonight. I've followed as much google-able advice as possible; well lit room fix ect.
Yeah, outside of those, I don't know what more I could tell you.
I can't even explain the feeling I get while playing, I wouldn't call it motion sickness or even queasy, I haven't actually felt physically sick from playing. It's just a very unsettling feeling which leaves me feeling quite uncomfortable, so much so that I need to step off.
Hmmm, weird. My fiancee hates when I play Durandal because she's a little bit photosensitive. I can make it through about 3 or 4 levels before she either has to leave the room or I have to stop playing.
I played through Aleph One quite some time ago and I completely agree, the terminals ARE the be all and end all. It's what makes Marathon, Marathon. Back story, dept, and rampancy! The terminals alone really are the defining factor which made my initial excursion into Marathon so enjoyable. Really appreciate your advice, here's hoping!
I don't know what it is, but I love me some whacky, pissed off, A.I.! Leela, Durandal, and Tycho in Marathon. The assortment of them in Halo especially Cortana. SHODAN in System Shock. I still find that I'll go back and read some of the terminals and some of the information just clicks then and I find myself understanding more or I'll think of something that I hadn't considered in the past. Like in the beginning how Durandal is talking about how he's sorry that your stuck with crappy weapons in the beginning of M2D but they are working quickly in order to get you a fusion pistol in order to take out the pfhor compilers coming up. Stuff like that that you might miss the first time, but get the 3rd or 4th or 10th time you play. ~B.B.

 •
Posted by: BerserkerBarage I finally got around to doing the XBL license transfer for my new 360 and I started playing M2D a little bit. I don't get photosensitive/queasy but I could definitely feel some of the effects and I was just trolling around Waterloo Waterpark. Some friends of mine suggested that there is an option to remove the "weapon bob" which means that when you're moving, your gun will stay stationary instead of rising and falling like the ocean-creating motion sickness. A few others have suggested that you'd make sure the room you're playing in is well lit. The lower the lighting, the more your eyes have to focus on the television, and the quicker that "spew" feeling is going to hit you. Hopefully you can make it through without driving yourself to pray to the porcelain god too much. The game is a really good one, especially if you take your time to read all the terminals and really try to understand what's going on. The terminals in M2D are pretty much the equivalent of cut-scenes in Halo, except they are far more descriptive in Marathon. Although it did take me a little bit to learn the difference between a pfhor, a s'pht, and a f'lickta! ~B.B.
I'll have to look into the gun bob tonight. •
Posted by: BTHR Zero X Hey BB awesome jobs with the Video's my friend I'm going to have to go back and play this game again ^^ But why I'm here would you or anyone else be up for a good old game of Kill the Man with the Ball? it is good fun you know you want to :P
Funny you should mention that. I have been flirting with the idea for a long time of trying to organize an old-skool M2:D night where we try to get as many people on it's Matchmaking as possible and just see who we can play against. I've tried to contact Hippieman over at Freeverse to see if they'd be interested in doing a "spotlight" or contest (like randomly select one guy playing and send them some swag) but I haven't had any luck getting a hold of him. Unfortunately some real life priorities has interfered with my ability to organize such an event as well. Lots of ideas up on the "white-board" and little time to plan/do them. I'm still theoretically planning on doing another set of vids showing the terminal locations so people can get the "Hats off to 819" achievement. ~B.B. [Edited on 03.09.2009 7:56 AM PDT]

 • I'm with you on that regard Reclamation since I still don't have all the "hidden" terminals. The good news is that you don't have to get all the terminals in one play-through. The bad news is that if you're missing the same terminal every time, you'll never get the achievement. I dunno. I might get back in Durandal and see if I can do it. No promises though. ~B.B.

 • I was pissed as hell on my first play-through of of Ex Cathedra. I couldn't figure out how to swim =*( There are a lot of places where it would be very very easy to get lost/confused/easily distracted in Marathon. I know on Kill Your Television it took me a while to figure out how to move the water from one area to another. I've gotten a lot of PMs on here thanking me because they didn't think they'd be able to beat M2D if not for the vids and they've gotten a whole hell of a lot more downloads than I thought they would. I think before Mythica went down all the vids together had almost 10,000 downloads. ~B.B.
