What woman does he have to love?
Yeah, because women are attracted to skinny, short men with litte to no will, obviously. Muscles? Height? Pffft... that's for losers.
John has muscles, height, and is an utter sociopath with no life beyond butchering anything he's ordered to butcher. Guess which one of those is kind of restricting when it comes to relationships.
He also knows friendship, and while he rarely (if ever) shows any kind of emotion, he certainly has feelings towards the people that surrounds him. Calling him a 7 foot tall monster who knows nothing other than killing people is just too far-fetched.
Yes, he understands companionship, but it's more along the lines of allies than friends...except toward other Spartans, of course.
Nope. He's undergone significant character development on that front since the Fall of Reach - faced with the prospect of being the last Spartan, he started to open himself up to others and realises that they're not so different after all; that's why he becomes friends with Johnson, form a close bond with Cortana and in Halo 3, develop his silent friendship with Thel (which for me was the best part of the game, I loved seeing all the subtle body language change from dislike to distrust to acceptance to friendship.) He even mentions this sentiment in First Strike. [Edited on 10.20.2012 2:22 AM PDT]
