Agreed with everything you've said ITT.
I'm still looking forward to Halo 4, it's only too bad that it has a generic summer blockbuster soundtrack.
It's not generic, it's really good! :P
I don't think so. It lacks identity and doesn't strike me as something I'd expect from Halo.
This is the kind of stuff I was talking about. After ten years of listening to only 1 guy's style of music, you've all just assumed that the only way it can sound "like Halo" is if it has Marty's seal of approval on it (which, by the way, the Halo 4 soundtrack totally does).
Marty has his own style, themes and motifs he uses. To you, on a subconcious level, that is the only thing Halo can sound like. If someone changes that style, or even if the Artist changes, you suddenly say it sounds "generic," a bandwagon trigger word that does not accurately describe the topic. The original Halo trilogy had just as many songs that sounded "generic" as this one does. this is not generic. Nor is this. This, by the apparent definition of this forum, IS generic. It's a simple repeating motif overlayed with percussive background music, put to an electric guitar.
Most movie tracks wouldn't go for this cosmic horror feel of foreboding. Nor would they attempt a deep space tragedy. Halo, on the other hand, would.
Before ODST came out, if I told you that Halo would have a new artist for a new Halo game, and that he was going to be heavy on the jazz and saxaphone, would you have flipped your -blam!-? Probably. If I told you that artist was not new, and was just an experimental Marty, you would be a lot calmer, but still likely would have flipped some -blam!-.
And then I gave you narrative and visual context, allowed you to play the game. Suddenly, the soundtrack is the one of the best in the franchise, despite not being anything like Halo "should sound."
So tell me, how exactly is Halo 4's soundtrack unfitting for Halo?
Good post. Looking at what I said, I went with a poor choice of words to describe my opinion on the music of Halo 4. Instead, put it like this. The samples on the OP are now any piece of random stock music and so are the past Halo soundtracks. No narrative or visual context.
The pre-Halo 4 music will still sound better to me. Not because of the guy who wrote it, but because I prefer how it sounds.
People assume too much and think they have to justify or make an excuse for every single thing in the world. Mass Effect 3 has several new composers. I wasn't hateful towards them at all, as a matter of fact I enjoyed most of it even if my favourite tracks were from Sam Hulick.
