Let me answer, the effect of the halo was made only around our galaxy, which is 100,000 lightyears. So, inorder to see in time 100k years ago, you have to look outside our galaxy, so logically, bungie choose the year 100k years ago for a reason, that reason is that so no one from the galaxy can see the halo activation.
