A Question: Why Can't Users Lock Their Own Threads?

Why can't a user lock his or her own thread? It seems it might help when an OP's thread is derailed.

You cannot dictate what is or isn't allowed to be posted in a thread. 3. Locking your thread because of trolls and/or flaming would prevent further discussion related to the topic. The proper procedure (in some situations) would be for a moderator to warn or suspend the user(s) that violated the forum guidelines.
