Is a motorcycle a good idea?

Hello everyone, the times is approaching when I will have to get an automobile. I am seriously considering getting a motorcycle, since I know they get great MPG (50-60 mpg for some), and are generally cheaper than a car to buy. They also just look badass, and fun to use. I go biking a lot, so I think I have an idea of what it would be like, just a lot faster with no physical effort on your part. Anyway, my parents are completely against the idea, because they think that I will get into a high speed crash and die. What do you guys think? Is a motorcycle a good idea? I live in Houston,TX by the way, so most of the year is warm enough for one. [Edited on 07.31.2012 7:19 AM PDT]

 • I think that would be a bad idea for your first vehicle. Drive a car for a couple of years, and then go to a motorcycle if you still want to.

Disadvantages: - You can't carry more than one friend with you. - You can't go shopping properly. - It's more dangerous. - It sucks when the weather is not right. - Helmets can be really annoying to wear and carry. Take your pick.
I just added more to the arguments. I suppose it comes down to how often you'll be using it, and what you'll be using it for.
They have helmet locks on them so you don't have to carry them with you, but yes it can be annoying carrying your gear with you.

 • I was just like you at one point, thinking a motorcycle would be a great idea...Until my tire blew on the interstate at 70 mph. Wonderful life changing experience. I honestly don't know a single person who owns a motorcycle and rides regularly that hasn't gotten into some sort of accident or crash. Getting caught in the rain sucks, having to deal with absolute idiot drivers sucks. I've been nearly ran off the road a few times because people aren't looking when they change lanes.

 • Great idea, I have one and it is my favorite purchase so far. If I am nice to it I get around 57 mpg. If I beat on it, I get 40mpg. Insurance is 20 bucks a month for the ultimate coverage and it costs me about 12 dollars to fill it with premium. Plus the ladiez love em.

 • They way i see it a motercycle should be a side vehicle, one that you don't use all the time. The way I'm planning it is that I'll use a car most of the time, and the motorcycle if the weather is nice and I'll be driving on smooth roads.

 •
Posted by: Khirna No. Motorcycles are not a good idea. Ever. They are impractical vehicles. Get a sedan with decent gas mileage. You can't walk away from most accidents. It doesn't take much to hurt the human body. Most likely, if you wreck on a motorcycle, you will be going to the hospital.
Motorcycles are great vehicles. They provide excellent fuel economy, they take up less space, and they're just fun to ride. Much cheaper too. Yes, they aren't as inherently safe as the other 4000 lb behemoths on the road, but a bike is much faster and more agile that those vehicles as well. As far as accidents, with proper protection a rider can survive just about anything. There will be injuries, but bikes aren't the death machines most ignorant people make them out to be.

 • Motorcycles are more dangerous than a car, but their cheaper. I looked into getting a motorcycle when i was first getting a vehicle, but my parents talked me out of it. Insurance is extremely cheaper for motorcycles, and depending on the Motorcycle, you can get good MPG. There are only a few trade offs like less protection, nothing to ride in the winter months (unless you really want to) and noise level.
Perhaps that was worded poorly. If you hit something, you're obviously -blam!- in about 20 different ways. But if you, say loose control at a somewhat high speed, and the bike goes out from under you, you'll slide on the pavement with relatively minor injuries. And in response to your orignal post, you can get a high end dual sport for about the same price of a decent sedan. Also, i doubt you can top the 100mpg some bikes are getting these days. Finally, you can't pick up hot girls in a sedan. [Edited on 07.31.2012 7:44 AM PDT]

 • Well you are more vulnerable than in a car. And you has no roof to block rain. :P But you look badass whilst driving a motorcycle that looks awesome. Especially if you wear a Spartan helmet instead of a regular motorhelm.

 • This isn't a decision you make by committee. Take the basic riders course, then make up your mind if it is for you. Then get a cruiser and NO LANE SPLITTING. [Edited on 07.31.2012 7:30 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: CoffeeTunic I understand why your parents are against the idea. Motorcycles are very dangerous, partly because you don't have a metal frame surrounding and protecting you. If you're hit, your body take the brunt of the blow. Another concern is the low profile of a motorcycle. This makes them harder to see, especially in poor visibility conditions. Then you have to worry about even small bumps in the road, because you'll feel it with a bike's limited suspension. Add in the fact that you're exposed to the elements, like rain, snow, and extreme heat, and motorcycles don't seem too hot. A car is a much safer and overall more comfortable option, even if they get less gas mileage. You can also take more than one person with you in a car, and carry larger things as well.
I agree with this to an extent. Almost every man in my family has or had a motorcycle so I'm all for them... However, they've never been a daily to anyone that I've ever known.
