We have people starving in many countries, overpopulation, an energy crisis, cancer that needs curing, why are we blowing away billions for something that we have barely gained from?

Well, it is just all about that final frontier, man.

-
Because the people who are starving are starving because of tyrants who we have not killed or removed yet. Billions have been spent trying to help them, and not much has come back out of it.
-
Agreed OP. Until we have the technology to quickly travel to other worlds and set up colonies it isn't worth it.

You talk about over population. The best way to over cone over population is get a whole new planet and move half of our human population to it. Which requires space exploration. Or we could use a planet just for farming.

Striving towards redundancy, mainly.

Overpopulation rules out your argument OP. Plus we have enough food to feed the world but governments must (using that world loosely) control the flow of food into their country to have power. Same with the energy crises. That also rules out your argument. NASA and other space agencies have made countless discoveries including energy efficiency. Money doesn't cure cancer OP.
Posted by: Ankrow Agreed OP. Until we have the technology to quickly travel to other worlds and set up colonies it isn't worth it.
...wait Then how the hell we're supposed to get those tech if we don't do the researches ourselves?

I know it won't be humans on earth this far into the future, if there is any thing at all, but in a few billion years our sun is going to burn out. Whatever is living on earth at that time better be able to colonize another planet in another solar system. [Edited on 05.13.2012 7:31 AM PDT]

Neil deGrasse Tyson would like to have a word with you.

Although it can be interesting, there are far more important things to be spending money on than space.

Most problems occurring in third world nations are their own fault. I don't think wwe should spend billions in aid when all we get in return are caskets with the remains of the aid workers.

Simple solution. We Nuke everything from orbit. Space exploration=win.

It's to do with discovery, if you can't get it, then tough luck.

I don't agree. We are just going to become stagnant, always trying to fix the problems we have on Earth that will likely never be fixed...many technologies today have been derived from space research. Most other technology is for entertainment crap. We must keep looking towards some greater future, something we don't understand.
-
Well, beats spending money on more nuclear weapons.

Put simply, I agree. Overpopulation, as the world stands, is NOT an issue, no matter how much people think it is. The issue is mainly with money and water distribution. Things like food and water should take precedence over bringing back a lump of rock from Mars.
