1/3 = .333.....
2/3 = .666.....
So does
3/3 = .999.....
or
3/3 = 1
Posted by: drummer0702
Posted by: Kkman4evah I lol'd hardcore. OT: I seriously have a fried brain now. 3/3 is the wierdest number I know now. It equals 2 numbers. Ugh. I really hope that I don't have to use this logic somewhere else >.< I'll be arguing too much with it that I'll fail anyways
Haha. Don't think of it like that. They actually equal the same number written two different ways.
That's my exact point haha. I'm used to one number equaling one number. New concepts: Not something I'm good with lolz

Don't even get me started on 9/9
Posted by: Dream053 What I'm unclear on is whether in the context of, say, the mass of some physical matter, if, mathematically .999... would still truly equal 1. It seems that this is true because it is demanded by Humanity's mathematicians (which still seems to be out of convenience), rather than a declarative proof by mathematics itself. That is more along the lines of what I was asking initially.
Well you can't exactly relate it to a physical object since it uses properties of infinite quantities, which don't exist in any tangible sense at all. What I'm unclear on is whether in the context of, say, the mass of some physical matter, if, mathematically .999... would still truly equal 1. Would said mass still be complete and whole or would there be some insurmountable, infinitely small measure missing? Perhaps this is not even an answerable question, as the only way to answer it would be the same method of mathematics. It seems that this is true because it is demanded by Humanity's mathematicians (which still seems to be out of convenience), rather than a declarative proof by mathematics itself. That is more along the lines of what I was asking initially. [Edited on 12.12.2010 8:40 PM PST]

This is where the party is. Stick around. I heard some girls are coming. They love math parties.
Posted by: Kkman4evah Thanks for that. Now get to the point at hand or leave >.<
I'm not referring to you at all. You seem genuinely curious as to why this is the case. (1/3)+(1/3)+(1/3) must equal .999999........ BUT 3/3 also equals 1.
If 1/3 can equal .3 repeating, why can't 3/3 equal .9 repeating?
It can. It does.
Exactly.
