Disc Not Reading? Call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX for support (see page 35).

Every game I have reads fine but Reach will not load. No scratches and it won't even get to the point where I can install it to the HDD. It even came up as a DVD a few times... Urk: If you are experiencing disc read errors with Halo: Reach, please contact customer support at 1-800-4-MY-XBOX and report the issue. As soon as we have more concrete information, we'll update this thread with the next steps. [Edited on 09.15.2010 3:22 PM PDT by urk]

    • I have the same problem. I noticed occasionally in matchmaking I would suddenly get booted from the game, with the "disc is Unreadable/dirty disc" error...and always RIGHT at the split second when the map was supposed to first open...not always, only sometimes. Then I pre-ordered Halo CEA. I was super excited to see Breakneck, since I was a HUGE halo 2 guy. When the disc arrived in the mail, I popped it in, put in the code for the map pack, and fired up Breakneck... "Unreadable Disc" Upon further investigation,it turns out that both Breakneck (while EITHER the "Reach" disc, or the "CEA" disc are in the tray)as well as the Reach map "Powerhouse" cause the same error. The funny thing about the latter is that it's a map from the original disc, not DLC that could've become a corrupted file. M$ Support gave me the run around, claiming my case to be "Unique". They tried to goad me into sending my "out of warranty" box in for a "repair",which I refused. They then tried to tell me that the problem might be in my Hard Drive, so the best thing I could do was SEND THEM MY HD, and they would then send me a new one. (???) I explained that I had lots of content on my drive that I didn't want to lose, and that they should just send me a new drive...WHICH THEY DID...YIPPEE ! ! ! ...but it didn't work. I still get the errors after transferring all my old files, and re-downloading the map pack. I believe it was the second most recent Dashboard Update. I think it had something to do with the new "Slim" xbox consoles, and trying to tweak the older consoles' firmware to match the newer models(?)...I read somewhere that it effected how the machine reads the disc(?). But I think the change effected some games (VERY few) but REACH was one of them. I think they are trying to downplay this and hope that they can quietly upgrade warrantied XBOXes, and quietly hope that UN-WARRANTIED box owners sulk away figuring it's their fault for being "Early Adopters", and meekly upgrade to a newer 360 console, before again being slapped with the NEW MODEL in 2014. It's shrewd marketing.

    • Yeah this is total BS and a half, Because I literally just bought Halo anniversary, and now this game wont work. Microsoft are scams, but I just luv Halo too much to give in. Also, I tried your method to fix it, and it still won't read it. I might just get the X slim, because fortunetly for me this is the only xbox I had bought in the first place without getting others to replace it.

    • When Microsoft made the 360's they put faulty disk drives into them so Most of the original 360's that were purchased were already "broken" in a sense. If they would have put good drives into them then they wouldn't have came out until after the PS3. In which case most people would have bought a PS3 rather then their 360's.

    • I'm having this problem too, with two different copies of Reach on an original console (it's been repaired once by Microsoft). The problem did not occur until the last update; I've had my copies of Reach since the day it was first released - this just started to happen. No other discs of any type are having the issue (e.g. movies, other games). I cleared the cache before reading this. The problem is intermittant - some times it works for one game and fails on the next game. I was looking forward to getting some Reach time in before the release of the anniversary edition, which I've pre-ordered, but if MS can't fix this problem, I might not even bother with the anniversary edition.

    • I'm having the same issue with Reach. I've got the Limited Edition disc, it's in perfect condition, and I'm playing on a new 360 S console. This only started after the last system update. And Reach is the only game affected. It does start up, but only once every 2-5 tries. Logically: 1) It is not my console (other games would have problems) 2) It is not my disc (unless it magically went bad immediately after an Xbox system update) 3) There's a problem on their (Microsoft's/Bungie's/343's) end and they need to fix it. • if all the other games run fine then it must be the disc i don't think it's your xbox or something else but is your xbox PAL or NTSC

It tried to save you from this pile of -blam!-. Give it a kiss, it deserves it.

    • Summary for me after reading and researching is: Halo Reach 'disc unreadable' happens while almost all other games discs work (Halo 3, ODST etc). The Xbox will provide 'disc unreadable' error REGARDLESS of the condition of the disc surface. XboX Support will NOT tell you why, they will only walk you through some fixes which WILL NOT resolve problem. In the end they will offer to repair it, for those with warranty for free (?), for those without 100-120$. It feels like a corporate strategy to force die hard gamers to RE-BUY new consoles as Xbox moves into its twilight years. This way peeps who want to play the last generation of games are forced to purchase new consoles, letting M$ milk enthusiastic gamers for profit. Will the NEW HALO CE have the same problem? Probably. Things I have tried that did not work: -Removing Hard Drive and trying to playing game. -Disconnecting from Wireless/wired network connection and trying to play game. -Clearing systems cache, and doing the 'real' clearing of systems cache (the LB, RB, X, -blam!-) and trying to play game. -Jimmy's stupid magnetizing trick. -Installing games on HDD and trying to play game. I have not talked to Bungie about this problem. I have talked to Microsoft about this problem, and they blame this problem on your console which is illogical because of two reasons. First, if something was wrong with the consoles all games should be affected (i.e. laser prob, disc tray prob etc..). Second, Halo Reach DID WORK on my console when I first bought it. It was not until some months later this year, after Xbox sent out new updates, that the 'disc unreadable' problem began. As such, it seems the new updates have had the effect of invalidating older consoles from playing Halo Reach. That this happens, and with Xbox's flagship series most recent game is absolutely disrespectful to Halo fans. For all these people out there who just want to play the game I feel for you. Halo, for many, is the only redeeming aspect of 360, and to be UNABLE to play ONLY this ONE GAME is a slap in the face to xbox supporters. This will certainly be the end of my ten year relationship both with Bungie and M$. [Edited on 10.20.2011 2:42 PM PDT]
