Does K/D really matter?

Yes, K/D is ALL I look at and care about!

221

No, K/D doesn't show your skill set!

I just want taco's <3

To start things off, I'v only had Destiny and a PS4 for about 3 months so I haven't built my K/D that much, and yes, I know that a K/D is what half of players look for first in a player. But why? Yea, having a high K/D means your "Better" but you have to take that with a grain of salt. Just like with Light lvl's, light doesn't equal skill . Across most FPS's I have played, I have had a .80 to 1.75 K/D. So that means that in most games I roughly go positive. Same with Destiny. I love the PvP (Most of the time) and the way Bungie brought it all together. I personally in Destiny don't have the best K/D even though 90% of game I go at LEAST 1.0. But the other 10% of the time I'm either warming up, have garbage team mates who cant watch my back, and or I'm just dicking around with friends and dying on purpose. But that small 10% can have a huge representation on you K/D in a bad way. Right now I'm sitting a .90 K/D in normal Crucible. Which isn't great, but inst terrible. Even though I could hope in a Pub right now and go 15-2, I still have a negative K/D. But does K/D really show your skill, or just the fact that you can get more kills than deaths? I'm mainly just ranting/bitching about this because even though I go positive 90% of the time, when I'm trying to find a Fireteam on LFG for trials, people wont even give me a change because I have a negative K/D. They base everything off K/D and not skill or even equipment. What do you guys think? DOES K/D show your skill set and level, or does it show that you can sit in the back of the map with a sniper half the game and get kills? Have you guys experienced this before? Should you give someone a chance in a normal PvP match before taking them to Trials just so see if what they say is true? Maybe I'm just a cry baby who's bad at the game. Hahaha.

  • K/D just gives you an idea of how good a person is, some people go out of their way to delete characters and make new accounts to get a good K/D though. I know for the first few months in destiny I would join iron banner games and just afk farm rep and that completely destroyed my k/d. I never realized people would care so much about it in a game with no leaderboards.

    • K/d's important but its not everything. It shows ur skill, yes but not ur true skill. You can play better if u try hard.

    • I just see it as a matter of consistency. Everyone can have good games and everyone has shitty games. Just because you have 2.0 doesn't mean you will go positive every game and I don't expect you to but the higher your k/d the higher I trust in your consistency.

    • While K/D may matter, I truly find that if I am looking for a team player that knows of team shot, I'll look for high KA/D.

    • In general yes. But guys can just pub stomp or get a team of snipers and go into skirmish and just camp in the back. I heard there was some top player with like a 6.0 kdr who used to do just that, go into skirmish with a team of 3 final round snipers and just sit in the back.

    • I don't particularly think that K/D is the sole metric that people should be judged by. Here's my issue with it, a lot of the top PvP players / high K/D players play with a team of people that they know and have played with quite a bit and it's a pretty well known fact that if you do your K/D is going to be higher than someone like me who plays PvP solo. I seem to always be matched up against fireteams and stuck in teams of players that couldn't careless about coordination or watching each others backs. I suspect that if I were to find a group of people to play PvP with all the time whether it be 6v6 or 3v3 my K/D would improve substantially from where it's at right now. I don't particularly blame people for judging based on K/D for ToO though because they just want to know that you're able to hold your own. In my case I have a long way to go to get back to a decent K/D in ToO as I've spent the last 4-5 weeks just doing bounties and dying a ton, so I wouldn't expect anyone who's serious about going flawless to pick me up because of it.

    • It's different with destiny because the majority of the game modes are objective driven. Lots of times you have to decide to play objective or get kills. So if you've lost all 3 flags in control you kinda have to decide which you'll do. I think medal score is a good way to gauge players but at the same time you could just farm and get a stupid high medal score. Not too sure about most of it but if anyone else knows a better way please let me know

    • Because there is no real ranking or competitive game mode k/d is one of the best judges of skill. Even though players with huge k/ds just pub stomp in a 6 man lol

      • Id also like to say, that when I'm playing Trials, and I get revived then IMMEDIATELY get snipped, with my health full AND a over shield, and die, and when this happens 2,3, even 5 times, its definitely messes with your K/D in Trials.

      • Difficult to answer but I'd say no it doesn't matter, it isn't an accurate representation of skill level. It's merely a kills to deaths average. I'm a Voidwalker, I often play extremely aggressively. Getting in my opponents faces and blowing it away with Invective or trying to get to a spawn/ammo drop and blowing up as many as possible. I play my Voidwalker kinda like a juggernaut, I'm going to rush and kill as many people as I possibly can and if I only trade with one person so be it. Now that being said, I do play smart and play objectively. I try to get at least 2 kills for every 1 life. But even then if I see a chance to stop my opponents plans by blinking into a situation and causing havoc then so be it. The Striker is the same way, I trade with Shotguns so many times because I'm trying to shoulder charge them. Other days I play conservatively. I camp, and wait. I hold choke points and aid my teammates. This leads to great K/D but in the long run is rather boring. In the end I think people put too much stock into K/D and if you're a 1.5+ you're obviously doing something right. But if you're out there having fun and helping your team win that's good too. My best advice would be as others have said, play smart. Try not to do anything stupid and die needlessly. But other than that have fun.
