A veteran's view on refer a friend ...

This was originally posted as a comment in another forum but some concerned citizens feel it needs to be in feedback so I am posting it here as well. Bungie, I hope you read this and take it to heart. My husband and I have been playing Destiny together since Beta. We started out buying everything for both of our 360s. We bought two of each of those crappy updates Bungie passed off as expansions. We weren't happy but we kept going. We even brought more people to the game! We did our best to put our faith in Bungie. We upgraded to Xbox Ones and Destiny was our priority. The Taken King was going to be so much better, it just had to be. (After all, it couldn't have been much worse.) I got my Xbox One on the release day of TTK and we began game sharing and we were rather pleased with this new expansion. The new leveling system wasn't bad either. We weren't very excited about our old gear being useless but we would move on. Destroying our old exotics was painful but we had to in order to upgrade our new ones. Progress takes sacrifice, right? We have seen Bungie listen to TONS of whining about PvP and balancing and at least attempt to respond. My favorite shot gun lost a very useful perk. He did without multiple shadow shots for a while. Bungie was listening though. We told a few people who had doubts because of Destiny's reputation that it was getting better and they came to Destiny too! My husband and I have fought through the crucible and tag teamed those lag switchers SO many times. (Yes, yes, chase that critical warlock right into her hunter hubby and feel the pain!) We've overcome missions, quests, nightfalls we shouldn't have been able to duo, and bug-filled raid after raid. We have cheered each other on, laughed with each other, made tons of fun of each other, and seethed with anger together over this game. Now, Refer a friend is here. We've already referred our friends. I don't want to duo dance with some random. I want to dance with my husband, my partner in crime, my kick booty hunter dude who has had my back so many times! I want to give a high five to the man who deserves it after all the crap we've been through together. We're game sharing so we will even spend the $60 we don't have to spend so he can have the license! That's not good enough for Bungie though I am afraid. (see link) They want your money, unless you are a veteran, in that case they don't care. I feel very betrayed. It's not about the shader, the emblem, or the emotes, *grumble* or even that black and blue tron sparrow and sword. It's about the fact that most of your true veteran players have already been your sales people. We've brought our friends in and gotten nothing for it. Now, if we want these things, we have to link to some random person because we're tapped out on people? Not cool Bungie. We've built or bolstered so many strong relationships through your game. Please allow us to recognize them. I know you want new players but I can promise you that pissing off your veterans is not the way to get them, nor is it the way to keep your loyal players. After all, we're the ones you KNOW are loyal enough to stick around when you screw up. Sincerely, One pissed off Tigress

  • Hear in lies the problem with a refer-a-friend system that starts and year and some change after the game was released.

  • The sad part about all of this is that this "Refer-a-Friend" program started in the good name of Sherpas who actually put up with a lot of crap helping others achieve their goals in the game. And this is Bungie's way of "rewarding" them? How the two are related, is beyond me.

    • Outstanding post. It's a shame because Bungie doesn't realize that it's not only unethical to ignore their year 1 players, but it's also a poor business move. A loyal player base that is treated with respect will bring them more money than a few thousand new recruits. I'd buy DLC after DLC if they respected my time and energy. Sadly, they've edged a little too far into the greed portion of business tactics. They need a better balance. I'm all for a company making profit, no problem, but the players can only endure so much disrespect.

      • Very well said! I can't believe that Bungie thinks that after a year of playing, EVERY...SINGLE...DAY, now we're supposed to find friends to play? Just like you said, I've tapped EVERY resource (friend) I have to join me with this game already. Refer a friend is a COMPLETE SLAP IN THE FACE to veteran players. I'm slowly playing less and less and I'm bummed that the Destiny experience is almost over for me.

I feel the same Tigriss. I've been recruiting since day one. I've gotten friends and family to buy this game. Not to mention that I got my son into too. So like you said, I have to buy two of everything. Two games, dlcs' silver, whatever. We also started on the Xbox 360 and graduated to the Xbox one with destiny in mind. All the money I've spent on this game is absurd. And to get no recognition from bungie with this "recommend a friend" thing is a slap in the face. We are the ones playing since day one. We've paid huge amounts of money to be their game testers. We've been putting up with their lackluster performance. I also feel the same as the poster below. It makes me sad that after the thousands of hours I have into this game, all the people I got to play it that have left due to their shady practices, the money I've spent....I have little to show for it. Pretty disappointed. When you equip that shader or glowing sparrow, you should be ashamed. I'm one vet that won't be sporting their new shit.

This post literally made me cry, I have nothing to say just, Bungie, if you're listening, I beg you, don't treat us veterans like a money generating machine. I did not believe I would ever say this being one of those people who stuck with you through thick and thin and this is probably my first comment on a forum.

          • Seriously though who the -blam!- refers a friend when there's no new content about to drop. That would be more enticing to refer a friend

          • Yeah, me and a friend got another friend into Destiny. My friend who already had Destiny even payed for it because the other was skint. This was a month and a half before TTK. Then TTK comes out and he's locked out of everything. He's a racer and bought Forza so that ship has sailed...or car has driven off. I've bought the game twice(fkn disc drives smh). I've actually referred myself.

          • hey ive been here since day one, i even played the beta with my dearest friend Justin, and i wanted to say that im very ashamed to be playing this game, not because of the people that make fun of me for playing this, i even stuck true to destiny through that i didn't let them push me down. But the thing that makes me ashamed to play this is that for all my hard work, fun times, and even the bulling i went through you still rewarded me with the satisfaction of knowing that new player get rewarded for nothing (giving them the refer a friend quest). Like really i bought the special addition, emote, masks, and even season passes, like give us something bungie its just not fair

          • I havent looked entirely into it yet but why not create a new gamertag on each xbox and then refer each other. Maybe this isnt possible with the terms since I havent looked yet but I see it as an easy bypass on the first glance

Alpha player and clan founder here I'm happy to introduce a new friend and help them - been doing so since the start and will keep doing so as long as Destiny is of interest. Trinkets don't matter it's all about the fun and the friendships.

            • Want some cheese to go with that whine? The entitlement culture these days is so pathetic. This is a promotion meant to bring in new players. A lot of companies do it in some form or another. News flash, it is available to everyone.

              • I've been in denial of this for over a year but Bungie just doesn't know how to make a game in this genre and they shouldn't have tried without a lot more research, testing, and willingness to break the mold. Refer-a-friend is but one stumble on Bungie's (so far) year-long pubcrawl. Let's not even get into actual in-game issues.

                • Dudette, its a fun promotion meant to help people convince their friends to join them in Destiny, just in time for Black Friday deals. chill. its not a "NYEH HEH HEH!! HOW CAN WE PISS OFF PEOPLE MORE THIS TIME?" for 'Pehnt's sake, its inconsequential things too! shader/emblem/emote that do nothing gameplay wise. a sword that is just a re-skin (essentially) of the ones we already have. and a sparrow that goes SLIGHTLY faster than usual. its meant to be fun. people like you just suck the fun out of things, I swear.
