Ok so it looks like the hackers are starting to employ the old XP stealing now and it's starting to happen more and more. Yesterday while playing a nightfall in sunless cell my fireteam noticed that every time I died the name displayed was from a player that we had passed on the way in! This seemed odd so I monitored the situation and noticed that I was getting no credit for kills at all. Neither my guns not my gear was getting any xp. So to test the theory I threw myself off the side of the bridge a few times and sure enough each and every death was attributed to this guy too.
So what's happening you ask. Well basically he inspected my character and effectively hijacked my connection replacing my identity data with his own. In this way I (or you if you are his next victim or victim of a similar script kiddy) are doing all of his legwork. He grabs anything that you would have gotten. Luckily I noticed before finishing the nightfall and was able to kick him off my server connection before continuing the nightfall (only credited with half of my kills as a result though).
Next question is what is Bungie doing about this as their server data should be able to identify people doing this. You yourself can't report them because to you they don't appear in game.
Edit: For those of you calling BS. It's not. They use a PC to grab the network traffic. and then grab your ip. They are effectively piggy backing off of your server id. The script to do it is a PC mod and is available online. Really don't care much if you don't believe it as both Bungie and Microsoft have now been informed and I've passed on the details of the user involved to Microsoft who are now actively investigating it. For those of you who played Cod on PC you'll already be familiar with the method used and I'm not going to detail it here as it's bad enough that it's now appearing in Destiny at all!
Edit: Some people seem to be trying to convince others that it's some harmless glitch that has been around for ages. It isn't! At no point is it a glitch to have all of your XP and rewards suddenly going to some random player you happened to pass while running through a patrol. That would be like saying it's a harmless random glitch if your bank suddenly started paying in your wages to another random account of a person who happened to be walking past the checking desk when you paid in the money! Computers don't work like that. They don't get confused with data tagged for one account and suddenly decide to send it to a completely different one. Like I said in another reply Microsoft are aware of the script kiddies and this has been around since the days of COD. COD being slightly worse in that your could end up reduced to level 1 again while the hacker got millions of points of xp.
Edit: I would also think on this. Last time people like me reported stuff like the DDos attacks and the lag switching we were ignored until it got to epidemic proportions. Trials was a joke as a result and Bungie had to end up banning and removing the gear from a lot of people! In this case it's likely that this mod has become more prominent because of people testing it out for trials. It's going to be very unpleasant when people running trials for flawless (I'm not going to be one of them) find that some random player not even in their match has just achieved flawless while standing in a tower teabagging the cryptarch!

This happened to a friend of mine in strike. All of his deaths and orbs were given to a random name it was the most odd thing I've seen on destiny! Good to know what happened at least..
-
This has happened to me exactly twice since day one. Both times it happened when I was running though a loading zone at the same time when someone else whom was not in my fireteam was in close proximity. We ended up going into different instances and when I died his name would pop up. I would go to orbit and the issue corrected itself. I am not enough of a CIS major to speak to the exact cause and if it is the result of a script but I can say from experience that going to orbit corrected the issue.

Show us the video where you're getting kills and the exp bar isn't showing "+x exp" and maybe we'll talk. If you knew anything about how networks talk to servers, you would have stopped before you even posted this. Riddle me this kid; if he piggybacked your IP, how did he differentiate which packets are exp and which packets are gun sounds or death animations... You should just go back under your bridge troll.

Look at all the people who don't understand networking.
-
I've seen this happen before, but I doubt it was some kind uber haxor trying to steal anyone's xp. Fixed itself when we went to a different area.
-
This is supposedly happening to me aswell
-
I've seen this happen first week of ttk, my friend kept dying in the nf and it kept showing another persons name
-
How did you kick him off your server?
-
Some dude did this at the tower and I used around 20 motes upgrading my guns and I got no experience on them.

Edited by Noctu: 10/29/2015 10:27:16 PMWait, when you died, did your name get replaced with someone else's? Because that happened to me back in HoW and I still got my rewards/kills
-
I flew into a strike last night with 3 others. I think Bungie is having issues with the servers. We shall see.

Edited by Cubonej: 10/29/2015 9:06:11 PMnot possible, stop creating our own networking rules. Do You know what a server base game is? smh ON A SIDE NOTE: if you kicked him of the server (which is normally impossible) wont that make you a hacker too?
-
I wouldn't have even read through except I noticed a fireteam member name as my death. Idk, maybe some truth? Didn't verify xp gains.
-
Doesn't work like that. The other player would need access to this guy's game to hijack networking calls. Either the "hacker" would need direct access to this guys console/pc or network and that's given that there is a very bad security flaw in bungie's net code and that they're not using decent encryption which I highly doubt. This guy is full of it.

You can't spoof an IP unless you have server access. And then, IF you can even find that instance address server location and gather enough information from the users in that instance to spoof said address. By the time that's all said and done (if you can even get passed the trillions of security protocols in place) I would be done with the strike and possibly a few more strikes. Stop using big words to spice it up and sit the -blam!- back down with your lies.
-
I was in a fire team earlier in the week and My friends noticed that every time I died it was coming up with someone else's name. Is this the same sort of thing?.
-
Intercepting server connections and the data that gets transferred is completely possible.
-
But these changes to the requests are done on the Users' end so it is harder to find people who do that.
-
There is also computer software that can intercept, stop and modify HTTPS requests that can be used with an Xbox if the computer hosts its own proxy server.

Edited by iInfinityLimit: 10/29/2015 8:55:04 PMProof this can't happen here. https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/166693115/0/0

You have absolutely no knowledge in networking.
-
Can you use a DNS host to cover your IP? Even if it is traced, it would go to the host.

Who cares? Please, someone take all these worthless blue engrams out of my life. As long as no one is piggy backing when I'm in the Hard Raid then I have no worries.
