What's with all these 'I'm a girl gamer' posts?

I mean seriously... Why does it matter? Don't we all want to be acknowledged simply as just gamers? As people who can pick up the controller and kick butt? As people who deserve respect and not crude jokes? Shouldn't people be willing to help all fellow gamers, not based on gender? It seems to me these posts do more of a disservice than anything. Asking for help based on gender seems counteractive to the girl gamer cause. I'd rather have help because someone sees 'oh snap, they don't see that Taken Lieutenant breathing down their back because they're busy fighting off those Acolytes and Knight, I'll just kill the Lieutenant real quick.' I'm sorry if this makes people mad. But it's kind of truth... So, bring it on.
I understand my user name states in a girl. I have no problem with girl gamers or girl gamers stating they are girls. It just should be in context, and not attention seeking, ie 'girl gamer here, AMA
