The traveler's story is it was being hunted by a dark force. We can assume it originated closer to the center of the milky way and it made its way outwards and found temporary peace in the Sol system on far off arm of the galaxy.
These are the best assumptions I can make on why each race wants it.
The hive:
The hive want it because it seems to be the only power that can effectively fight it seeing as we are in affected by the taken king's power, they can't have such a power rising against them, simple as that.
The Fallen:
The fallen seems to think that we stole the traveler from them after the traveler visited them, them powerful, then it left them and caused a collapse of the Fallen's golden age. Now I think they fight against us in hopes they can have their golden age back.
The Vex:
The vex for some reason don't show as much obsession over the traveler as the others but I bet they still want it. from the way the vex use their Confluxes we can assume they use a form of alchemy to make their mericals of erasing time and space work but only in the VOG, and the traveler could be their form of a philosopher stone and may be the answer to bringing their work outside of the VOG.
The Cabal: seem to Care less about the traveler seeing as how they're more interested in how the vex work. As far as they're concerned the traveler has an army and all they want to do to that army is crush it.
The traveler:
The traveler is a being of light and ether, now where do we here those two words together? The item etheric light that gives old underpowered relic new power and light, similar to what the traveler did to the humans when it first met them. The traveler is also comprised of electroweak (a substance that is theorized to have existed shortly after the big bang) and neutronium (a substance that is thought to exist inside the core of neutron stars) which makes me think, the traveler lived since the beginning of the universe and its light may be that of a neutron star.
Doesn't this make sense?
Sorry if it was a little long.
to sum up, the traveler has existed since the dawn of time an is, in essence, a neutron star.
Quick note: I know there is more in the cards and I'm reading through to see what I missed, expect a revision soon.

The traveler is an egg.

I appreciate your elaborations but try and be educated on the grimoire, unless your intention here is to propose "what-ifs".
-
Actually the fallen (Eliksni) were visited by the traveller and they called it the Great Machine. Then they had their own collapse, and the traveller left. It is not a giant servitor, read some grimore

I like your stance on the cabal. It kinda annoys me when people say 'well hey! Oryx are hurting the cabal! We should make them our allies!' and 'they're just running. They're not invading!' No. They're a conqueror race that will grind a mountain to dust rather than build around it. You MIGHT say the cabal have the most potential to become our allies though. We still need more info on them.

The traveller made the vex. The darkness corrupted them.
-
'Cause it's a b'tatoe
-
The Traveler is what attracted the Darkness in the first place.
-
Maybe the traveler stepped on their lawn
-
You should have a look at the grimoire.
-
You don't read Grimore huh? Wrong

The traveler stole all the Cookies, that's why everybody hunts him
-
The Hive are creatures of darkness that want to conquer. The Light fights back against them. The Fallen think we stole the Traveler from them. It had it first and gave them their own Golden Age. The Vex were created by the Traveller but became controlled by the darkness. Not much is known about the Cabal, but they're not fighting us as much as they're running from something (the darkness?).

The traveller is being hunted....
...because it stole my bike!
-
The traveler is is an evil force. The hive are the good guys, it sees what the traveler is and wants to destroy it. The guardians are merely zombie pawns. Created from the dead. If you were resurrected and learned you've been dead for hundreds of years, your understanding of religion is that light=pure, then you too would swear your life to the immense being of light that's undeniably godlike. Just because something looks good, doesn't mean it is and the same can be said about something evil turning out to be good. Year 10, guardians will realize the traveller is evil and will set forth to destroy it... Perhaps it'll be some bullshit, traveler destroys earth, the player is one of the few survivors. You team up with current and new alien races for an assault on the traveler. We may be dark infused guardians instead of light Speaker comes in "I wish I told you the stories of old...there was time then"

It's hunted cos a big person threw a ball for his dog to catch, the darkness is the hair of the dog as he goes to retrieve the ball, the enemies are just parasites on the dog
-
Edited by one_mounts: 8/22/2015 6:51:56 PMIt's not hunted. But it wants you to think it is.

I bet when the traveller was with the fallen it had given them powers and the fallen started to use that power to conquer other worlds causing the traveller to leave them because of their warpath ways.
-
The fallen definitely had the traveler before us, it is known, the general concensus is that ether is the fallen replacement for what guardians call light. They worshiped the traveler as a god and it left them, they are trying to get it back. The people theorize that the hive are servants of the "true darkness" whatever that may be, and that they are trying to destroy the traveler so the darkness can take over the vex are interesting, as you say, them seem more interested in the vog than the traveler, thier motives can not be accurately speculated at this point but thier end game seems to be turn all planets into part of thier machine network. I want to add that while it's true that the vex can't control time outside of the vault, technically, mathematical speaking teleporation is a former of time travel. Also the people seem to think that there is some kind of religious scism within the vex, the theory goes that not all vex choose to worship the black gardens heart, specifically the denizens of the vault of glass We know little to nothing about the cabal, it is said the are running, most likely from oryx and the taken but possibly the "darkness itself, or maybe the vex are spread much further than we think. They are hear looking for some kind of edge against whoever this enemy is

Similar to what I was thinking I thought it was originally a serviter that broke away and became infused with light
-
Cuz they want his body
