So recently I decided that I'm probably buying The Taken King because it looks great, everything that game informer talks about sounds like a massive step up. And besides having a good amount of content the system refinements that they are working on seem great. It got me thinking about how they'll expand these systems with the second season pass. And before I dig into that allow me to say I will almost definitely not be picking up the second season pass. If you look at quantity of content AND quality vs the price of the year 1 season pass... It's not good. The dark below was admittedly bad with how they changed the systems and the house of wolves tried to fix this but in doing so with ascension it made obtaining any of the new fallen and queen's gear pointless (because it was bad). And not to mention these dlc packs were tiny. A couple of story missions, a strike, and an endgame piece that would replace the current endgame piece. And the endgame pieces are really what these dlcs have at the highest value but the systems needs to work which they haven't. I credit Bungie for adding in two separate endgame activities in HoW but trials is pointless because the pvp is unbalanced and garbage an like I said, PoE is fun, but the rewards were meaningless. And this pass comes at a value of $30-$40 depending on how you purchase it. So think about that TDB and HoW are at the same value monetarily as The Taken King. And maybe you loved these expansions which is fine BUT as soon as the taken king was announced a bundle was released that lets you buy the base game, both dlcs AND the taken king for just $60. Effectively saving $70 and that's if you buy everything at the most convenient price. Now lowering the price of the packs is not the solution because I still think these packs aren't worth much. How to fix it: I know bungie and activision want to milk us for every penny we have but here's the thing The taken king looks like it has exceptional value. Bungie is learning from mistakes and making substantial changes and adding a wealth of new content. So my counter offer would be what if you combined both of these smaller dlc packs and split the Taken King in two and added half of that content to the respective expansions. Heck with this logic you could also add in a third expansion in the march following the second expansion. So imagine as a destiny player you buy the base game for $60 in September and then in March of the next year a sizable expansion hits for maybe $35 that keeps you playing for another 6 months when another giant expansion hits on the anniversary of the release. People react much better to actual expansions that have extensive work put into them and it would detract from the monotony of these smaller expansions. You could also revitalize events in destiny such as iron banner, queens bounties, maybe trials, ect distributed more evenly throughout the life of the game to spice things up. To say that the house of wolves or the dark below had insane here-and-now value with the sword bearers and packs of wolves running around is ridiculous. You could turn these things into events that keep people coming back while adding more to the actual expansions. It would add real chapters to the adventure, not just something you complete in a day. An hey maybe this is unreasonable but I think bungie needs to reevaluate these smaller dlcs. All I know is I learned from my rush to preorder and support bungie and this next season pass will probably suck and could basically be free 9 months after the first one comes out.
