Mom, please don't take my toys away!
I am, surprisingly to myself even, pretty bummed about this TTK news.
I wasn't sure how I would end up responding to news like this, and I have discovered that it has completely crushed my enthusiasm for this game. This is a frustrating similar feeling as I had to TDB reveal... making me feel like a child whose mom is taking away all his old toys, saying, "you're too old for these now." And no one wants to feel like a child.
What this does more specifically is shine a light on how silly it is to spend hours and hours of my free time grinding away for gear in this video game. After learning I could ascend all my favorite gear with HoW I jumped back in full force, and have been having a blast finally getting my armor where I wanted it, levelling Fatebring to 365, and finally scoring a VoC just days ago. And now to my dismay, I've been shown that all of that was quite literally, a complete waste of time. Or maybe, now I'll just have to do it all over again in two months, and I just don't know if I have the energy for all of that. Sure there was plenty of fun to be had in that process, but the reward are all of these toys I've worked so hard to gather.
I'm happy for the folks stoked on this, and I wish I could be one of you... But I think this news has solidified that I won't be pre-ordering TTK, and will instead wait to see what the word on the street is after launch.
Bungie - If this is not the case, and our gear will still be relevant, you guys need to make this explicit sooner than later or players like me who see this as revealing the gaping hole in this Destiny's core gameplay system will be gone (and I doubt this news will garner enough "new" players to make up for those they'll likely lose)

My guess is that while we won't be able to ascend at release of The Taken King, they're planning on allowing Ascension again after that. I will be cross-posting this to all of the threads I see about not allowing Ascension because I'm sure Cosmo has better things to do than reply to every new thread about it.

1 ReplyEdited by Swiftlock: 8/4/2015 6:53:17 PMI think the heart of the problem is that when other gear progression games introduce new content, it's usually items that are exciting, viable, and makes players feel comfortable about discarding their old, beloved gear. Destiny failed at this. Badly. Like, crashing off a cliff in flames badly. We reached a point where there was little reason to use anything short of ascended past-era weapons, with few exceptions. What really should be done isn't to provide us another way to cling to the same stale wepaons, but to make newer gear worthwhile enough so that players don't feel bad about putting down their VoC's and Fatebringers.
