Shotguns would be LESS OP with MORE range. (Read before commenting)

I know that title doesn't make much sense, but read my whole post and maybe you'll understand my point. If you obviously didn't read before posting, I'll just assume you're bad at reading and tell you to go back to kindergarten. Now, first: what makes a weapon OP? The CE Magnum was a monster, killing in 3-4 shots when the assault rifle took dozens. What made the magnum ok, though, was that everyone had one. Sure, any scrub can buy Hard Luck Charm (I'll be referring to it as HLC) from the crucible quartermaster, but for the best shotguns, players are at the mercy of RNG. HLC may not have the raw power that Felwinter has, but it has a much better fire rate. Why is it considered completely inferior when it greatly outperforms Felwinter in this area? The answer: it's very rare to need a second shot with a shotgun. And here we have the root of our problem: there's very little difference between the range of one shot kills and the range of total uselessness. What Bungie needs to do is increase the range at which shotguns can do significant but non-lethal damage. Imagine this scenario: Player A is using HLC and Player B us using Felwinter's Lie. These two players spot each other at medium range, a range at which both of their shotguns are useless. They begin charging to get within range of their targets, each other. As it stands, Player B will get within range first and score the kill. But imagine that, at this close to medium range, the shotguns are a 3 to 4 shot kill. Now, Player B will still be within range for a one-shot kill first, and he still has to go for the one shot kill because of his inferior fire rate. Player A, however, can engage at 3-4 shot range because of HLC's good fire rate. With this range increase, the shotguns that were previously thought to be useless can now compete with the the old favorites. Because these shotguns are easier to obtain, more players will have access to top tier shotguns, making Felwinter's Lie, Matador 64, and Party Crasher +1 less menacing. Tl;Dr: They should significantly increase the range at which shotguns are good for 2, 3, or 4 shot kills without increasing the effective range for 1 shot kills. This will make it so that faster, weaker shotguns will have a new advantage over the slower, more powerful models while not surpassing them entirely.

  • A more accurate title might be 'Some shotguns would be Less OP if all shotguns had More Range'. The only problem with your argument is that shotguns in general would become more OP even if the playing field was more even because everyone could get an OP shotty. If you think back to when the game first launched, Shotguns and ARs had a much further range. This didn't cause people to use a variety of weapons because everyone had access to very powerful weapons. Basically everyone used an AR and Shotgun because if you didn't use one, you were at a huge disadvantage. There is already precedence for what you're suggesting and the crucible was terribly unbalanced for it.

  • I dont know why nobody ever mentions Found Verdict. Same range as felwinters and thats IF you roll felwinters for range perks. Shot package and rangefinder being the only things that make it slightly further. Regardless I like my Verdict over felwinters,party crasher,etc in ALL situations

      • Since day one I've always thought shotguns need much higher range with a spread increase. Further away you are the fewer pellets that hit the opponent, but still cause some damage. I find it frustrating that the bullets basically disappear at distances more than 5 metres.

      • This idea would help balance shotguns. But, they would play further into what is supposed to be fusion rifle territory and players would have even less of a reason to use them. This would be good in the scheme of shotguns, but bad in the overall meta.

      • The problem is that a shotgun should should not be used as a primary as it so clearly is in this game. It's a special weapon and is supposed to be situational. Shotgun range should be so miniscule yet so high that people within your range should expect to die, but people outside of it can laugh as they shoot you in the face with a primary weapon because they're not scrubs.

        • Am i the only one who thinks universal remote should be firing slugs instead of having a spread? Seriously, it should have the longest range of all shotguns, yet even it is outclassed at range. Imagine this: Player A is using felwinters(optimal perks) and player B has universal remote. They spot each other at roughly scout rifle to pulse rifle range....B charges A, A then simply aims then fires, nailing B in the head and killing him instantly..... Max effective range: between scout and pulse rifle range. If the slug hits the body, it only does meager damage at best. But a precision shot would be pretty much a one shot kill. It would still be a one shot at shotgun range, but at longer ranges, it would need to land a precision shot to kill another guardian, or even an ai enemy.

          • The issue is how fast people move in crucible. I am able using a mida and blink to go from one side of burning shrine to the other in under 4 seconds. Thats stupid quick and with a shotgun I'm only a bit slower. If they make it harder to close range on someone then it will make if easier to kill shotgunners as they approach

            • Yeah extended range with staggered drop off ranges without last damage only being 1 per pellet. Could work. Also mess with the spread come a bit. Then you pretty much have the Halo CE shotgun. Lethal in close but can still be used farther but requires several shots. Battlefield also seems to use a system similar to this.

            • They aren't nerfing shotguns because their range compared to other shotguns, they are nerfing them because their range in general is to far (for a balanced FPS) that in conjunction with the ridiculously small map sizes and over use of tight confined spaces is what causes the issue we have today with people running around using shotty as their primary.

            • Yea, they should make them similar to the shotgun in borderlands and halo. Where the pellets can still hit and do decent damage at medium range but requires more shots. The shotgun range and spread in destiny is absurd lol. Even if I'm shooting the boss with a shotgun far away the pellets should still hit and do moderate-low dmg.

            • Here's the major problem with your argument, assuming that shotguns like HLC are useless, when in fact they're not. They simply serve a different purpose. For example, obviously Fellwinter's Lie and other guns like it are the king of their class in PvP. One shot on a guardian is an instant kill. You suffer fire rate, for the confidence that you only need one shot to kill. But take a second to consider PvE. Not many high tier enemies go down in one shot, so something like Fellwinter's becomes inferior to the faster rate of fire guns like HLC. Because in PvE, you often DO need more than one shot to kill. Increasing the range of those shotguns will solve nothing, a shotgun is a close range weapon, plain and simple. Otherwise, why even have the fusion rifle?
