Do I seem like the military type?

My friend's dad is an Army recruiter, and I showed a bit of interest in it so he took me down to the recruiter's office today. I spent a good five or six hours there, talking to different people, getting a general idea of which fields I could go into. I took a practice ASVAB with a bunch of other prospective members. They scored between 36 and 50-something. "The test is a bit harder than the actual ASVAB, so don't sweat what you get," my recruiters told me. Taking it I wasted about five minutes on the math portions because it had been a year since I took a math course, and my brain had forgotten how to do it. Anyway, it caught on after a while and I tore right through it. I got an 89. For those of you unfamiar with the ASVAB, a 76 or above basically qualifies you for any non-officer job out there - and whatmore this was on a "harder practice test." I'm heading to Phoenix this weekend for my physical and the actual ASVAB test. My friend's dad will head out there with me and attempt to argue a good contract, which I have no doubt will be easy to get. I have no criminal record, I'm in great physical condition and I'll have a nice 80+ on the ASVAB. I like the sound of, "Military Intelligence," don't you?

 • Be leery of recruiters, their job is to sell, whether you get the intended product remains to be seen. You may be hot for a certain field, but when the opportunity is there, there will conveniently not be any room for you, and you'll be a kitchen hand instead. Obviously a dire contrast, but just an FYI.

 • The Military is a one way ticket to Freindly fire from certain allied nations. *cough*usa*cough* Oh, wait, you're in the American military. Just aim away from our Canadian Peacekeepers, PLEASE. The Canada flag means don't drop a bomb on us, a fact the american military seems to have missed. Unfortunatly for our peacekeepers, that's the only thing they missed.

 • As long as you know what you're getting into since the pro's and con's between MOS's can vary greatly. (ie: the issues Impurity brought up, of all of us he would know best.) It sounds like you have a good recruiter though, especially if he/she is telling you both sides of the story.(compared to the one who fed me crap in high school) I will say that my experience has given me some of the best friends in my life.

 • Mechanical was fine -- I don't really recall a cooking portion -- but from my girth I would say that I passed it easily if there was =D The coding part did click for me -- unfortunately I was nervous because it didn't click until 7 minutes had gone by of a 9 minute segment. Luckily the patterns were simple sets of 4.

 • Picking an MOS is weird. I picked an aviation job. Obviously, it's something useful and I enjoy it, but jobs like that are hard to get promoted in. Jobs that usually come with a bonus are hurting for people because they suck. But...you get promoted quick as hell and your initial contract is a lot shorter. And that coding part was easy...once I realized how it worked. I was hung over and had been awake for two days when I took the test. Scored a 90. I think I effed up the mechanical and cooking portions, but who needs that anyways?

 •
Posted by: GameJunkieJim Obbi -- the coding section of the ASVAB is a -blam!- -- your head will do somersaults. The actual test is a bit easier than the one they give you on the laptops, but code recognition/pattern recognition is a strain. Prepare -- practice finding patterns in group of numbers and letters. It's impossible to truly prepare -- but the ASVAB isn't too hard -- I scored a 97 -- (I was gonna be a swabbie, but children and an irate wifey stopped that) It's like a GED test should be (if it wasn't designed by morons).
Good, because that's my strong suit. Pattern-recognition IQ tests always place me near the top possible score, and I've read through a few military issue cryptology handbooks. I'm going to find the ASVAB study pal at my school's library and look over it briefly (Assuming it's not too big). My biggest issue is concentration. On the practice I read each problem through like five times before my brain actually focused on what it was saying. I'm loading up on Ginko Boloba (sp?), which I know has at least convinced me of improving my concentration. And now I'm chugging water since I realized this weekend I have to drop. I can't remember when's the last time I smoked, but I don't want to come up positive.

 •
Posted by: impurity Good God, Obbi! That's how they got me! They took me down to do the ASVAB and only that. Next thing I know, I'm at MEPs all friggin' day. I took the test and my physical and picked my job. The recruiter wouldn't take me home until I signed the papers, the bastard! RUN FOR YOU LIFE! Kidding. Believe or not, I think you would do better in the military than most of the damn knuckleheads that actually do join. Just don't believe anything your recruiter tells you. ;P
I still hold my suspicions, but I generally trust these guys. They haven't once tried to present me with a job they thought "I'd really like." So far they've gone entirely on the info I've given them, and tried to caution me against taking the upfront money bonus for an MOS (it's $20,000 for truck driver, for instance). They've told me up-sides and down-sides, and have generally appeared to be very honest and blunt about what each entails, and which jobs to avoid.
