Why don't people learn to snipe?
Why do so many people just use a shotgun as they are better with it because it takes less skill to learn and they haven't taken time to practice with a sniper? In Iron Banner in most games there have been no snipers on the enemy team to battle with. Everyone is using thorn and a shotgun, most of them using blink (unless they're a Titan, then they just use shoulder charge). The few snipers that I've come across have all been fairly unskilled, and I have beaten most of them with my LDR.
Every few days in the crucible, I will run into someone who is really good at sniping, and kills me a couple of times. I then try to snipe them, because I know if I beat them with my sniper I have outplayed them, and it is much more satisfying knowing that my opponent is thinking 'GG' than 'stupid blink shotgun scrub' or 'thorn scrub'.
TL;DR
People don't use snipers because they are bad and are massive shotgun noobs.
Edit: Woah! Loads of replies guys! This was just a salty rage post written after facing full teams of shotguns in IB. I was kind of hoping this post would die.

I personally suck at every special weapon, so i just using sniper. I pulled couple of surprising moment. Unable to do when you use shotgun lol

It's all in the map size. CQC maps favor CQC weapons. Look at battlefields shotguns and there range. Then look at the map size.

Why snipe with a rifle when you can snipe with Thorn and carry a shotgun that can kill people twenty feet away? When I played PvP and used a Handcannon, I'd snipe.

I have 584 marksman medals and I don't use any of those special perks of 1 shot body kills and aim assist. I have my ways of getting around the scope glare. Just a simple glitch. Sniping is my thing. I also try to fit each weapon to its class. My hunter is a sniper. My warlock is a fusion user. My titan is a shotgunner. I don't like shotguns but I still use them to fit my class. Tho I admit I use felwinter with shotpackage. Can't help it. I am a sniper. Trying to get queenbreaker for my warlock for it is the only fusion rifle that is a sniper at heart. Alright getting side tracked. When I meet a good sniper I make them my rival. It's fun trying to snipe each other. Usually we snipe each other at the same time. When the game ends I just pick who wins by kill or alternatively, K/D. It's always good times.

Because the IB playlist has maybe 1 decent map to snipe on and most of the rest rely on hard scoping one of only 4 sight lines.

At the start of the game I was awful at using a sniper, but after trying and repeatedly failing I now dominate with The Supremacy. It is definitely a skill more players should strive for.

Personally I think it's all about your playstyle. I've never liked sitting back and waiting or camping,I prefer to rush and sorry but shotguns are made for rushing....or the scared bitches hiding in corners. [spoiler]nothing better than teabagging a sniper and shooting him/her with a shotgun while they're ads lol[/spoiler]

I'm trying! I lag all day and its hard when your whole mag does nothing :/. I got 6% better. I agree with you. When I get killed by a sniper, I think "GG" Getting killed by thorns and TLW and matador 64 is lame, and I'm guilty. I use it when the lag is unbearable, which is always. When I get those perfect matches though, I roll my bad juju, praedyth's revenge, and a random machine gun, like the BTRD. I hope Destiny 2 has dedicated multiplayer servers at least.

Kuddos guardian love the LDR and I agree. Wish there was more smart snipers though people don't know how to take proper angles. I believe it's accustomed to the map though most of them are fairly based around CQC.

I was going ham on shores of time earlier, i quick scoped a blade dancer than just activated his super. It was the nastiest kill ever!!! He just used it and i quickly turn to my right and BOOM Headshot!!! I loved it!
