Solving the Gjallarhorn Problem (and weapon ubiquity in general)

Let's start by saying that "Nerf X Weapon" is off the table: we don't want to discourage people from using a particular weapon. "Buff Y Weapon Class" will help get underused classes back into contention (ARs, of course), but this fixes only part of the issue. The main problem lies in balancing weapons and their perks. It's generally agreed that HoW guns are effectively trash compared to VoG/TDB weapons. Yes, the latter are both Raids, but they shouldn't be so OP as to the exclusion of all others (I'm certain any list of first ascended weapons will be littered with Fatebringers and Black Hammers). Note: I haven't forgotten IB/ToO weapons, just trying to keep on point. Conversely, another recent post on the forums cited concerns that TTK won't allow us to further upgrade/ascend our weapons. This would effectively leave our prized weapons (ones we've invested time and effort upgrading), gathering dust in a - hopefully expanded - vault space. We don't want everyone to rely on Gjallarhorn forever. Nor do we want a NuGjallarhorn 2.0. What we want are viable alternatives. Not necessarily better, but different. Weapons suited to different conditions, not one size fits all. Burn types help force players out of their comfort zone, but sometimes that lupine-friendly launcher wins out: solar burn or not. What I need is me more incentive to use a different weapon. Maybe the launcher doesn't have wolfpack rounds, but instead has a crazy large magazine and lightning fast reload? Maybe the handcannon doesn't drain health over time, but maybe it has a chance to blind enemies? What about other weapons with Icebreaker-style recharging ammo? TL;DR: Don't make good weapons worse or replace them with more OP guns. Give us weapons which are equally good and/or better suited to different situations.

I'm curious to see how Bungie makes the existing weapons irrelevant. Anyone who's played an MMO both loves and hates expansions for this reason. The gear they've spent all their time farming and stockpiling is all of a sudden useless and they have to start over, so to speak. This is how games like World of Warcraft kept players in the skinner box for so long. Some Perk/Gun Thoughts: -Sniper: After consecutive critical shots, players have a chance to drop special ammo for themselves and their team. -Perk on a slow firing/small mag hand cannon: Headshots stagger opponent, making ADS reticle sway. -Rocket launcher: Instead of traditional rockets, you get a launcher that fires a column of burn damage(arc, solar, void, whatever) that pierces through multiple enemies, but has a range limit. Doesn't fire across the map, but deals crazy damage up to a certain range.

    • Replace Wolfpack rounds with a new perk called saltbucket rounds and basically when it hits a target it does exactly the same animation and damage but for saltbucket rounds to activate you have to point emote at someone who doesn't have a Ghorn first to fill the saltbucket

      • The thing is, if people use always the same weapons, why do they need more vault space?

        • There is absolutely no evidence saying that we wont be able to upgrade old gear and weapons. People are just trying to find something to complain about.

          • Exotics should always be relevant. Our favored legendary's need to be left behind. If you look at the raw stats on Poe/queens weapons (stuff like impact rof etc) they are on the level with our favorite legendary's. The problem comes down to perks. There are a handful of perks that do not come on the new weapons that are possible on the older ones. Field scout, final round, return to sender, firefly, white nail etc. If the weapons that have these perks continue to remain relevant in end game we will never want new legendary weapons. So we need to either drop those legendary's entirely and make it so in the future all weapons have access to the same perks. OR we give these perks back. Personally I think we should just drop the old ones. There are plenty of good perks that were introduced with house of wolves (battle runner, army of one, focus fire being added to all autos etc) It's that the older perks are just too good. I do think some perks should come to year 2 weapons though. Like white nail and fire fly should be possible to be on all snipers, hand cannons.

                • They already snuck in a secret ghorn nerf. They just doubled/tripled enemy hit points for PVE content so you have to use more than one rocket on majors.
