Improving The 7th Column (Group Tags)
INTRODUCTION:
I was working on a group archive for the past few months, which would serve as a more enhanced search feature for the community. After hours and hours of work, I decided to give up; it was pointless. I was playing around with the group finder for about two hours and came up with an awesome idea... group tags. I experimented by implementing a tagging system and it's potential is unbelievable. The only catch is that I need the help of all chapter founders for this to work. Note: There will obviously be users who abuse this tagging system, so your searches are never guaranteed to be completely accurate. The more group founders participate in this project, the better the search feature will become.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
1. From your group homepage, select Group Settings. 2. Scroll down until you see this. 3. For the category Group HQ City, you may put the city your group is headquartered in. (Please note that a comma will automatically be displayed after this entry in the group search feature.) 4. For the category Group HQ State or Province, copy the text in the space below and paste it in the corresponding field. None | Tags: (Please note that if you put text in Group HQ City, you should put a State, Province, Country, and/or Zip Code in replace of the word "None") [Example 1] [Example 2] 5. For the category Group HQ Country, you are going to input the tags. Copy the text in the space below and paste it in the correspond field. [a] [restricted] [tag1] [tag2] [tag3] (The first tag should be changed to the first letter of your group name. The second tag is the group membership, which is either [open] or [restricted]. You may remove the remaining tags or add more, but they should describe your group. A tag should not include more than one word and should not include numbers, symbols, or other characters. Make sure there is one space between each tag and make sure each tag is enclosed in brackets. I would suggest looking at the tags provided below for ideas; this will help prevent having similar tags with the same meaning) [Example] 6. For the category Group HQ Postal/Zip Code, input the month and year your group was founded. Use the following format. [mm/yyyy] (This format was chosen for a reason; don't put the exact date or any other format. Why not just "mm/yy"? This is because if a user searches 08 for the year, they will also get search results from groups created in August of any year.) [Example] 7. Select "Save Changes", then go to Group Finder, and make sure the formatting looks like this.
HOW YOU CAN SEARCH:
Group Search has now been taken to a whole new level. I'm going to go through some of the different ways you can search with this tagging system. By Date Founded: The tag chapter founders put into the Postal/Zip Code section is what makes Group Search way more advanced. In the category "Zip/Postal Code:", input a month [mm/2, a year yyyy], or both [mm/yyyy]. You can then sort the groups alphabetically, by creation date, by member count, by founder name, or by location (searching by tag is shown below). By First Letter: The Group Name allows you to search for a specific group, however, you must enter at least three characters. With the first tag, you can now search for groups by their first letter. In the category "Country:", input [a] or whatever letter you want to browse groups by. Sorting by group name will list all of the groups starting with the letter you selected and put them in alphabetical order. With the other options, you can search groups starting with whatever letter and sort them by creation date, member count, founder name, or location. By Group Membership: The second tag founders are supposed to put is whether their group is [open] or [restricted]. In the category "Country:", input [open] or [restricted]. You can then sort by group name, creation date, member count, founder name, or location. If you want to narrow your results even more, use the date founded tag as well. By Name Tag: If you want to search by named tags that describe groups, simply input a word into the category "Country:" and select one of the sort options. If you want to narrow your results even more, use the date founded tag as well. If you are unsure of what to search, take a look at some of the suggestions for group tags below.
SUGGESTIONS FOR GROUP TAGS:
art, anime, campaign, clan, community, elite, entertainment, gaming, forge, fanclub, fun, halo, hardcore, help, marathon, multiplayer, mystery, myth, odst, off-site, off-topic, oni, podcast, politics, private, professional, project(s), recon, recreation, religion, secret, screenshots, support, tactics, undefined, underground, unknown, user-related Still in progress... feel free to suggest group tags that could be used for multiple chapters. PS: Maybe the Greasemonkeys group can create a script for this, which would change Country to Tags and Zip/Postal Code to Month/Year. [Edited on 12.03.2008 1:00 AM PST]

 • Well, I haven't started any major groups, but as far as the well thought-outness of this information is admirable.

 • cool, it works. I just implemented it on one of my groups. I will get try to get some of our allies and affiliates to do the same. <3 CG edit: you can add "subgroup" to the tag list, seems like that would be common. [Edited on 12.02.2008 7:27 AM PST]

 • Wow! Another amazing idea. It would be nice if they made a normal tagging system for it, but this will be great for now. I will do this with my group and get others to do it as well. You just have a truck load of knowledge and ideas don't you...

 • This is a decent idea. I love the idea of tagging groups, and it may even cut down a little on illegal advertising.

 • I am not sure how much I like the concept of basically advertising certain groups on the main forums. The whole idea of groups was so that we could be separate and free from the issues on the main forums. I would just hate to see certain groups flooded with members who don't really care what the groups about, because they were told to join it it here. I do agree with linking up in groups though. We already do it, so thats ok. The alliance section on the home page was a big help. [Edited on 12.02.2008 9:25 AM PST]

None of this is posting to the main forums, and in order for people to find groups with these changes you need to actually search for groups with tags you want in the group finder. I don't think it would result in a big flood of members who don't care because they would have to actually input effort, which would show they care, to find the groups they join.

 • This is a great idea, CG. I've always been a fan of adding keywords to make groups more searchable (see here, almost 2 years ago), and this seems like a good way to implement it. The city/country feature was originally implemented to help people find local groups for purposes of Halo 1 LAN parties. Thanks to XBox Live, most groups don't actually use the City/Country feature anymore. If this catches on, perhaps the web team could be persuaded to simply change the text "Country" to say "group keywords" instead, and no other new features would even need to be implemented.
