Why do I suck with thorn in crucible?

I have been hearing since I started playing destiny that thorn is OP in crucible.... My favorite bounty (and overall game experience) was the thorn exotic bounty and it taught me how to hold my own in the crucible. Since I've gotten thorn I've tried countless times to use it in pvp but I can't seem to get many headshots....and when I do its not even close to enough to drop my opponent. By the time the recoil is finished from the first shot the target is usually long gone.... Now I am no noob when it comes to killing people in any type of game.... but I can't seem to get thorn down pat! So I was hoping you guys could help me with some suggestions....because there has to be something I am just not doing right... Is it more effective from the hip or aimed? What perks or nozzle do you use? What's your strategy? And of course any elite tips would be appreciated. I have been spoiled with a high stability/full auto time on target for the last 6 months or so.... could it be that I am just so used to my overpowered gun that I just need to practice with hand cannons more? I have to admit I NEVER use hand cannons or snipers in crucible. I have no problem owning with scout and pulse rifles however....oh and u should add that thorn is my favorite gun in PvE and I have no problems with it there. I use it more than any other gun lately. Thanks in advance for any tips guys :)

    • Easy, because the Thorn isn't OP like everyone tries to claim. The sight on the Thorn is unique and takes some time getting used to using, starting out I used Perfect Balance until I got a feel for the Thorns recoil. I recently switched to using Send it with the most recent weapon re-balancement patch to increase the effective range on the handcannon. Things to note: Only the first hit triggers the DoT, additional shots will not reset the timer. While the enemy is under the effect of DoT they can and will more than likely kill you. If you get a shot and the enemy ducks behind cover grenades like Arcbolt (Bladedancer) or Firebolt (Sunsinger) can kill enemies. It takes 2 headshots or 3 bodyshots and the DoT to kill targets. Avoid close range encounters with TLW and Vex Mythoclast at all cost. Avoid engaging Red Death players out in the open as if they kill you their Red Death perk negates the DoT allowing them to recover. Best of luck

Do you normally use hand canons? I find that with Thorn aiming directly at the head doesn't always register as a headshot, I aim just slightly above and always land a head shot that way. Also, while head shots are good 3 body shots are a guaranteed kill with send it and aggressive ballistics I'd start there. Once you can land those 3 shots for a kill consistently I'd move to more head shots. Also, head shots for closer fights aren't reliable since you have shotguns and such so waiting for burn damage on 2 head shots may get you a kill but you might die also. My 2 cents

        • Try not to focus on the animation of the gun's recoil look for your reticle and focus past the weapon. Not sure if "dotting" works in this game, but might be worth a shot if you're struggling. This weapon has a large learning curve. I started using it this past Tuesday to get ready for trials. I probably got the hang of it by Friday after a lot of playing with it. Before this week I never used the thing.

          • Because the Thorn actually takes more skill to use than people realise. Especially up close.

            • Always aim for the head.... Get used to the recoil Before accuracy and damage drop nerf on handcannon, best perk is aggresive balistic and perfect balance, post nerf is send it Without range boost, i find its much more harder to land headshot

              • Glad I could help. Concerning TLW and the Thorn that ' aim and pace your shots' is utter Bulls*** !

              • You're probably aiming too hard, just point in the general direction and let rip. The game mechanics will take over and get the kill for you.

                • It's not the gun that makes the player, it's the player that makes the gun. You absolutely need to get headshots with Thorn or a skilled player will destroy you even if Thorn is "OP". Go into crucible and only try to land headshots and also learn strafing. bad players always freak out when you move from side to side.
