The Anatomy of Wargear: Hand Cannons

I'm one of those people who like to delve way too deeply into how things like sci-fi guns work. Destiny is of course my latest curiosity, and the one thing that bugs the ever-loving shit out of me is just how the hell an over-sized revolver can hold and fire more than six rounds. Now, now, I know what you're thinking; "Dude, it's just a videogame. Chill the -blam!- out." But let's really think about this. HOW does this work? What are the mechanics and science behind it? Is there an actual in-game reason or is it full blown space magic? Because the game's lore doesn't go over it very well. Let's take a look at Hawkmoon, for example. It's a beautiful, well-crafted piece of kit, right? Like a Desert Eagle and a .44 Magnum had incredibly awesome sex and spawned that thing as a result. For those of you unlucky enough to not wield this thing, one feature is prominent; it holds 13 shots in it's 40.6mm polymer round cylinder. First off, what exactly is a 40.6mm polymer round? Lord knows I've scoured Google and couldn't find a damn thing about it (at least regarding ballistics. I found some weird, unrelated shit that I won't go into.) But here's what I do know; a lot of Hand Cannons in this game use a 40mm-40.6mm polymer round as their source of ammunition. This is the oddest thing about these guns because nobody that I know of has any idea just how the -blam!- this works. On a normal revolver, let's say in this case Dirty Harry's .44 Magnum, we can see just by looking at the cylinder (the part where the bullets go in) has six holes in it, because it can hold and fire six head-exploding-ly powerful .44 magnum rounds. We also know it holds six rounds because Harry himself said it does ("... did I fire six shots or only five?") But we know Destiny's guns don't operate the same way, nor fire the same type of ammo. We know that when you reload a Hand Cannon, a big ass 40mm-ish cylinder is ejected from the magazine, mainly via gravity. If you look closely enough there are no bullets or holes for bullets sticking out of the front of the round. So, what the -blam!- is exiting out of the barrel? And if it's just one big round, why does the cylinder revolve like a regular double-action revolver? My theory is that, being futuristic guns, Hand Cannons don't fire bullets as we know them. Those 40mm polymer rounds? They're batteries. And they fire bolts of energy that have the kinetic properties of a bullet. This is of course my hypothesis and until Bungie comes around and explains just how their guns work (Which they probably won't do), this is what makes the most sense. So what do you all think? Discuss.

  • It works the same way the gravity effects guardians the exact same amount no mater the mass of the planet they are on. Space magic obviously.....

  • That is exactly what i am thinking too.. Guns in Destiny dont fire actual bullets but instead they fire energy bolts.. Maybe - i dont know - bolts of light? That explain a lot of guns like icebreaker, vex, super good advice etc.. Plus it explains how Guardians can alter the structure of a gun ( ex: Thorn or necrochasm ) using some sort of energy or how guns can affect a guardian's personality .. Its all energy related.. Dont forget that guardians are being brought back to life with some sort of energy.. Plus its obvious that enemies shoot energy bolts at you .. This also explain elemental damages and a lot of perks.. I think at some point of time the traveller gave humans the knowledge to acquire light - energy and use it for technological advancement.. So they used that knowledge to previously existing gun designs which transformed bullet guns to energy guns.. I mean how Pahanin made the Super good Advice? Is he a gunsmith or something? No.. He just took a machine gun and driven by his VoG experience used his energy to transform it or something.. That also explains why some guns have some sort of "personality" .. Since light-energy is what define us then the energy type used to manipulate a weapon can give a sort of "personality" to it.. Just thoughts...

    • 40 mm is the length of the round and calibre is the diameter. The rounds are probably 50 cal in most cases (or 0.50cal as you may see written down) This is normal, if you hold a .50 calibre round, it is roughly 4cm tall, yeah? So, 13 of them could fit into one of those chambers? Potentially. The rotation suggests it might be a belt feed, just a fixed belt inside the cartridges.

      • If u take a look at when you reload theres no actual bullets just a glowing cylindrical container with what i imagine is the escape which leads to the barrel directly on the tip of the container for tlw its silver with shiny gold trim thorn its an all green looking thing

      • Well polymer is basically just plastic so i guess its like hardlights tech where it superheats polymer rounds using high pressure air thats struck by an arc and ignites it and bam aliens die

        • I think ur theory is legit. Look at the other handcannons. The muzzle is pretty low (referring to its position in the barrel). It actually lines up with the lower part of the magazine (or round drum cylinder, which it is) Now if we look at the hammer, it hits the upper part of the cylinder. So there actually cannot be "bullets" und the magazine drum as we know it from normal revolvers, those had to line up. I guess we have to see the cylinder more as a container of energy, not of regular bullets which we are used too. So the gun "releases" or materializes the energy when the hammer hammer hits it after pulling the trigger. I think same goes for auto rifles. 1. How should 50-70 high caliber rounds fit in those little boxes? 2. I never see any shells popping out of my AR upon shooting. Or rocket launcher. This little film container sized can we are jamming into the top should hold 2-3 high explosive rocket?? Yeah, sure..... The only exception are the machine guns, I think. They are literally fed with a belt that has actual rounds attached.

          • Bungie can't explain anything in this game. If they could we would have a story.
