Destiny. Where'd it all go wrong? (Review)

So I've played Destiny for a good amount of time now and I believe it's time I write a brief review of my experience thus fair. It's my goal to be as objective as possible -- though my own biases may surface from point to point.
I've sunk considerable playtime into both PvE and PvP
. When I first heard of Destiny I bought into the hype.
This is Bungies new baby! I'm sure they're gonna make this a masterpiece to rival Halo!
With the smoke and mirrors of the pre-launch hype now long departed I can honestly say that Destiny has been a disappointment in more ways than not -- often floundering every time one believes it may leap into action. To begin, absolutely nothing exists to envelope the player into the world of Destiny. Interpersonal relationships between characters is completely non-existent, interactive NPCs serve as nothing more than vendors (whose faces and names one need not be bothered to remember), and any story that might have been is delivered in much the same fashion as a movie trailer -- short, chopped up, and incomplete. Had these been the only fundamental issues then I could've overlooked them; but, Bungie also failed to deliver in their environment as well. Looking around, a player might be beguiled into believing Bungie has delivered on its promise of sweeping landscapes and vast exploration opportunities; however, one need only scratch the surface to tarnish this image. Invisible walls, no-go zones; the altogether lack of discoverable content to engross the player, and the repetitive cut-and-copy design. The entire affair seemed like one big missed opportunity. Not to mention exploration is entirely pointless. One will not find any objects of interest aside from a ghost or chest containing instant-disassemble items and a palm-full of glimmer. Which is about as much variety as the enemy pool. I don't feel a need to even dive into this but it must be said. Enemy design was another disappointment. Bosses are just enlarged versions of trash-mobs with no creative effort put into them save maybe slight alterations to the skin. I don't expect a Picasso every time but this was nothing short of plain-old cheap. Furthermore, why are they such cowards? Taking cover is one thing, but the enemy AI goes to too great a length to avoid players to the point of being obnoxious. Lastly PvP. I feel like this was the only area in which Bungie managed to deliver (albeit deliver like a late pizza-boy). Certainly, PvP is not without its own flaws; however, I find it to be quite rewarding in its own right. I like nothing more than to be pitted against an enemy in which quick wit, fast reactions, and sound judgment need to be made in such a small window of time due to how fast engagements can be decided. If Destiny has any redeeming quality it's definitely the robust and uniquely-paced pvp. Overall, Destiny has been underwhelming. From a developmental standpoint, it's hard to believe Bungie needed millions of dollars to produce Destiny yet could fall so far from the mark. Don't get me wrong, Destiny has its own entertainment value; but that value is easily invalidated by other mindless shooters. Unfortunately, PvP (while fun) isn't unique enough in its own right to fully redeem Bungie or Destiny. Out of a possible 10, I would give Destiny a 4/10. Good enough to kill time on but not good enough to have staying power.

 • The key to understanding Destiny-hate is that they did just enough right to show us what it could have been. Destiny isn't a horrible game in total, but it could have been a masterpiece. The enraging part is that they should have known better, the mistakes they made were easily avoidable. It's not like these problems haven't been solved by the development and gaming community as a whole over the years.
