I hate religion, NOT your God

I would like to believe there is a God or some higher power. I can't see how all that is "life" could come without atleast a small nudge of something cosmical or spiritual. But in regards to the religions that people practice i do not care to fall in line. I do not think that man can understand all that the higher power is and what it's purpose is or why it does what it does. I also do not believe a man should have the right to speak in place of the higher power. Especially when people to this day misinterpret the words of an old book and use it's passages to essentially "mean what they want it to mean". They take things out of context and spout a phrase that in this day and age means little to our way of living and they try to tell us "this is what it means!" Religion functions like any other greedy, corrupt, gang and it only leads to telling people what is wrong with their way of living and how they should change who they are because "an unseen, intangible being says so." These days it is far less supportive and more judgmental. So i have no quarrel with your idea of a God, but rather the collective groups of religion. I will live my life as i wish to, and i will do good deeds because i want to help others. Not because i wish to "buy" my way into eternal salvation. If i die and there truly is an afterlife and i am deemed unworthy and sent to hell because even though i was a kind and loving person i did not believe in YOUR God, then so be it. I would not wish to live under a God who is that black and white in his judgment of souls. P.S. I do not mean to insult your religion or your God in any way. I respect everyone's beliefs as their own and we are all allowed to have our own separate opinions and lifestyles. So keep doing what you do if it makes you happy, friend. Edit: To the people saying "horrbile b8". You ever think it's a bad bait because maybe...it's not a bait? @_@ I simply want to share my opinion for those who are constantly posting religious threads questioning why people don't believe in God or hate religions or whatever. But apparently you can't post legitimate things on these forums...damn trolls...

  • I consider myself somewhat of a universalist. Perhaps "hopeful" universalism is the correct term. In the Orthodox Church we call it "Apokatastasis." The idea has been posited a few times as a minority position by some of the Fathers, including Origen of Alexandria and Ss. Basil the Great and Gregory of Nyssa. In light of the fact that Salvation in the Orthodox Church isn't a one-time acquittal but an ontological process of being healed and conformed to the image and likeness of God (Theosis), it's easier for me to view things through a semi-universalist lens since it's not as simple as the typical religious narrative of God-judges-you-by-your-club-membership. While the Bible and Church teachings are pretty clear that these doctrines, ways, and lifestyle is the God-ordained path for mankind, the fact is that many people within the Church are hypocrites whose hearts are misplaced and who only practice their faith out of nominalism. And by that same token, many people outside the Church regardless of their religion or irreligion may already be living a life more in line with God's path revealed to the Church than those even inside of it. In other words we don't know. There's uncertainty. That's why I call it "hopeful" universalism. We can hope that everyone will be saved since the potential exists--but by merit of that same uncertainty, we can never be certain in our universalism. With all that being said, I tend to think religion means more to the man than the God. It's a tool. Does it bring Theosis to that person and unite them to the divine? Is it helpful? It's what we make of it. I wouldn't say I "hate" religion (except Sunni Islam), but I don't think it's as important in itself since the underlying goal of each is more important, and religions only serve to help people arrive there.

  • Agreed. I think religion does more harm than good. It causes rifts between people and whether they like the term or not, religious people are indoctrinated when they can't fathom that their religion might not be true. It closes their minds to other beliefs and thought processes. The majority of Catholics don't even know much about their religion. That's the definition of blind faith.

    • Finally a like minded person. There is nothing wrong with believing in a God, but how can man really try to comprehend the inner thoughts of some higher, all powerful deity? That, and I don't like people telling me what they think I should believe.

      • Religion is gay. Every interpretation of a higher power is also gay.

        • Agreed. Also, I hate the pretentiousness of religions who claim to know the "Will of God". This is an entity that supposedly created an entire universe with a thought or word. What makes them think that we mortal entities can comprehend that will?

            • I changed the title so maybe people will stop thinking this is a b8. I just want people to see that some people have no issue with your God but rather your "religion" or all religions in general.

                • Actually God isn't intangible and also He is quicker to forgive than cast judgment. The devil says God is intangible and quick to judge but the devil is also a liar. And also you are right Gods ways and thoughts are higher than ours are. Cookie points to you on knowing that one!
