How Does Light Level Affect Engram Rewards?
So I just hit 20 on my first toon. Saved about five Rare engrams for when I hit 20. Got some light on the gear and now I am 21. But my question is, I have looted some more Rare engrams (nothing higher yet, no surprise though since I just got 20) and is it worth using those on my toon? Or should I wait for Exotic/Legendary engrams to use?
Basically, does my light level cause the Rare engrams to give me higher level gear? Or is all Rare gear maxed at level 20? The whole interaction between Light and Engrams is a bit confusing to me.

1 ReplyRun the strikes they are your best source of blues. Blues can get you to 26. 27 if you can run the roc strike. At 26/27 run Vault of Glass for chance for gear and weapons. This is temporary gear until you get vendor gear. The weapons of VoG are still some of the best weapons. Once you are level 29+ run the weekly and nightfall. Once you are 30-32 you can run CE raids. The adds on CE normal are 32 at the end of the raid. DONT BE ASHAMED BECAUSE THE FISRT FEW TIMES RUNNING THE RAIDS YOU WILL GET CARRIED. Don't be afraid to ask questions before each section starts. Also look for groups running it legit thru the whole raid before they teach you the cheeses.

all gear is max 20 and just keep grinding and grinding and grinding and grinding and then maybe you'll get something worth keeping

funny thing, i got all rustburner gear and jumped to lvl 24 with my hunter, i pretty much skipped 21-23 cos i didnt realise there were upgrades to the armour for 2 days

Turn them all in, blues will give you good building materials, finish the campaign and dark below dlc quests and you should get some legendary gear. Then save up motes of light and strange coins for Xûr on the weekend

Keep using them till you are level 24 or so. At the very least the materials for upgrading armor will be usefull in the coming days. Unless you already have those. At any rate. The levels will help you do strikes which will get you gear and more engrams.

Decrypt the engrams if you wait for purple engrams he may as well shoot yourself now blue engrams produce more legendary then purple. Blue = chance of legendary purple = chance of shards or energies basically o you need armor no no no we give you shards and energies. That's pretty much how it goes with those.

Gear level caps at 20. There is no benefit waiting to turn in your engrams. You may get higher light rare gear, you'll need the materials from smashing rares you don't want to upgrade legendaries and exotics eventually, and leveling the cryptarch gives you the chance for free legendaries.

Yeah endgame is all about getting vendor gear. Farm daily missions and strikes and get your Vanguard to level 2 to start buying gear. Each piece will get you a bit closer to the 30's. Once you hit 24 it becomes slightly easier to farm marks in the strike playlist and you can do the weekly Heroic for Strange Coins.

9 RepliesOnce you're level 20 all rare engrams you get are the same with random varying degrees of light. I would recommend prioritizing light level above all at first but you should be working towards getting vendor legendary gear to really increase your level.
