Bungie! Feedback: A solution to The Armor Problem. Light Level 2.0

As you know, much ado has been made about the Light Level system. The Armor Problem is that Raid gear, being the only way to max a character's level, forces a certain homogenization of character's abilities and appearance. i usually can't pick my Hunter out of a group of Hunters in a Crucible intro, and everyone generally uses the same few abilities, which removes the advantages of custom armor builds. This can be fixed with a few changes that appear to exist in the game's code already. Light Level 2.0 would add a node to existing gear or armor, similar to the nodes to lock a character's subclass in the beta. This node could be filled only with the investment of an Essence of particular source. That source would be ONLY a CURRENT, MAXED, piece of raid armor of the SAME TYPE. So once 21 radiant shards have been invested in a Relentless Harness, dismantling that would give you an "essence of the harness" or whatever you deign to call it. This Essence would allow a single, legendary, Hunter chest piece of any level to be brought to Light=36 after it, too has been maxed. The Essence would be a persistent drop, meaning any item equipped with it would guarantee to drop you a replacement upon its destruction. In this way you never actually lose your Light=36 armor unless you discard the Essence itself. This would prevent RNG from limiting your appearance or build customization without removing the requirement for time investment into armor. Upon a DLC release, the old raid armor would cease to drop Essences, only allowing armor to be brought to maximum spec. This keeps the sanctity of the old raids and the existing upgrade path intact while allowing die-hard fans of the raids to attack it with their favorite gear and abilities, and also requiring those die-hard fans to participate in new raids and challenges to be at their best. You could either open the node once again without dropping light=36 status (essentially deleting only the Essence) to allow guardians to bring their favorite armor with them yet again, or simply lock it in place, forcing them to plan ahead a bring a spare for the next DLC, or find another they like just as much among the new options. So there. Light Level 2.0. A bona-fide solution. Let me know what you think Bungie. (and of course, fellow Guardians)

  • I like the direction of this post but I think having to dismantle an item to acquire something like that could hinder the players ability to keep multiple sets of items for different play styles. Also, not everyone has the time to invest in leveling up an armor just to dismantle it and level up another armor they are wanting to actually use. I hope I didn't misunderstand that; if I did, please correct me! Haha I have had a similar idea to yours just laid out differently. Im interested in more feedback on it. What if in the dlc they added an upgrade node to the end of weapons and armors which would upgrade the legendary weapon or armor to the current max light or atk rating? (xur will still tend to the exotics). Those dlc specific upgrades would require raid specific materials to ensure raids are still important to complete (I think bungie still wants players to complete raids for max lvl). OR they could allow you to buy that special armor material (you mentioned getting from dismantling) from the dlc vendor using raid materials and then apply it to the legendary item (any legnedary item including non-raid) you are wanting to max out. Plus, Maxing out old raid gear using materials from the new raid would be awesome. Either way I think it would also be very useful if they added additional perks to legendary weapons and armor, especially chest and boots, so that the player can further enhance their play style. Raid gear's extra perks tend to only be specific to that raid so it would be nice to have maxed lvl and atk gear that was for more generalized play and therefor more specific to play styles, assuming you find the gear with the right perks you are looking for; this further adds to game time and character customization. A vanity would be awesome as well but I'd rather have play customization before cosmetics.....but that's just me.
