• My parents kind of did the same to me. They made me attend a private religious school as a kid and wouldn't let me read science textbooks. I made it clear to them I wouldn't stand for this BS and that I'd figure out my religious life by myself. I became Eastern Orthodox and they were initially very opposed and hostile, but eventually came to respect it after realizing how much practice went into it.

Which religion? Most of them actually frown upon forcing someone to believe, it's always a good idea to ask you relevant teacher which verses in your relevant book point to this. Discuss it with your mother. Islam encourages learning about every possible religion before confirming your faith. Christianity encourages a period of seeking other answers before deciding on your path. Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism, atheism, need I go on with the references...? Anyway the answer is yours. There is as far as I know no reference to a parent being punished for a child's actions or beliefs. I've never read it in any religious tomb I read. Maybe ask your teacher if their even is one, and start the conversation with your mother that way?

          • I grew up in a household where my dad was super religous and my mom was kinda "meh" about it, and once I told him I was gay, he snapped. He took me out of the will, disowned me, and said i was dead to him.

            • Here is how I see things. I feel like religion is similar to a penis, if you have one, great! If you don't? Awesome! It's when the person with said penis starts shoving it down people's throats that problems start to arise. Everybody believes in whatever they want, that's our right but pushing beliefs unto others can start wars. Your mother has no right to do that just to make herself feel good. If you don't want to confront it, just let her talk. If you're fed up with it, sit her down and have an adult conversation with her about how she makes you feel when she does that.

Convert to the only true religion: The Church of the Ogrelord. Tell your mother that Shrek will punish nonbelievers with an eternity in the lake of Hot Onion Sauce, and she must convert to gain entry to the Swamp Most Holy.

              • I was brought up Catholic, in a Catholic school, went to Sunday school, was a grade A student. At school I asked a lot of questions, at Sunday school I asked a lot of questions. At my first parent teacher meeting they requested that my parents try to curb my questioning, it wasn't good for the other children. In the second they asked if my parents would consider keeping me out of Sunday school and would they mind if I sat through mass with them instead. By the third I was in a grammar school... I was bullied horrifically and violently, finally I decided to calmly react by making sure the next fight I was in was the last one. It ended with that person in hospital. My teachers were horrified that I did it so calmly and didn't stop. By the sixth I was moved to a tech college and started my exam prep early... I really like the idea that there is a reason for everything but blind faith and ridiculous rules is not an answer I think anyone should accept. Religion is a great tool for helping to better the people in a society, help those people to become better and thus help that society to flourish. It is also really good for uniting people and getting them to do really bad stuff in the name of something. I now do very well in life and thank the people that subjected me to their behaviour, it has helped me become a caring person who helps in anyway I can. I hope others can learn from the behaviour of those around them, realise what they think is good and what is bad and act in a way that they find acceptable and beneficial to the society around them.

              • Respect your mother. Just smile and nod. Your not going to magically change your mind by making your mother happy so there's no point in making her upset.

                  • If she doesn't respect your decision to not believe in it then she less than the dirt under my boots. What I would do would to just 'go with the flow' don't deny but don't agree that you do or don't believe it. Cause if you keep denying it, she'll just keep shoving it down your throat. And if you're stuck living with her then there's no escape till you move out (hopefully soon). Or satan/ evil equivalent in whatever religion takes her. To try and argue and force religious nuts to stop pestering you is a lost cause. Those people can be so blind and ignorant. Refusing to believe fact in sciences or have empathy for other religions ect. There's no proof of God other than 'I believe' there's also nothing proving that he doesn't exist. But I think blindly believe something just because your parents parents ect made them believe that, is wrong. It just teaches people to be content and happy with no solid answers or just half answers that are lies of half truths. And disregarding facts and even human beings for being a different race/ creed ect is horrible. Is the church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster any less real than Christianity? Both made by humans. You can't disprove the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Or even the Invisible Pink Unicorn. If she still wont respect your views then cut her out of your life the second you can move away, because people like that don't respect you as a human to make your own decisions are toxic. Toxic people are the worst and you'll never be able to live your life to your full happiness with that always surrounding you. It's hard to cut family that is close to you off, but people like that don't change. And it will be up to you to free yourself from it. Also make her read 'The God Delusion' I hope this helps.

aUgh... Different generation there. Edit: don't shut it out, the more you learn the better educated in the belief you will be. If I could put myself in your shoes I'd say become knowledgable about the subject so when she brings up points you can make respectful counter arguments to question herself and maybe make her respect how you see things.

                    • I feel you, ive been fighting it my whole life and to be honest its made me lose all respect for my parents looking at them from outside that "veil", I dont think I could ever respect a parent who would treat their child any different for having different beliefs of such a trivial nature....
