Destiny Weapon Tuning or Destiny Weapon Ruining

Dear Mr. Weisnewski, There is folly is your proposed 'tuning'. You state, "Looking at raw DPS [damage per second], the Auto Rifle is the most lethal primary weapon class across all of Destiny’s activities." Of course it is. How can you possibly compare the DPS of a player holding down the trigger for the auto rifle with the speed at which a player is able to repeatedly pull the trigger for non-automatics? It is a flawed analogy. It would be like comparing the use of an electric air pump with that of a bicycle pump. There is no surprise one is faster than the other. I am also confused by your changes to the hand cannon. I, of course, am biased. I love my Hawkmoon. But you state, "We’re finding that players get very comfortable hanging back and using the Hand Cannon like a Scout Rifle or a Sniper Rifle." Have you ever tried sniping a moving target with a hand cannon? It is no easy feat. And it's no surprising players use hand cannons like scout rifles - they are essentially the same weapon. The only difference being the scout rifle has more range, more reserve ammo and a larger clip. So with these changes you propose, the hand cannon will now add even less range to the limitations it already has of a small clip and less than 100 rounds of reserve. Your changes are effectively turning the hand cannon into a single barrel shotgun. Seeing as shotguns already have a role, this change, this 'tuning' makes no sense.

  • I have the idea that at one time there were three primary weapons (assault, pulse and scout rifles), three secondary (hand cannons, shotguns and fusion rifles) and three heavies (sniper rifles, light machine guns and rockets) and that this got messed with at some point during development. The problem ultimately with nerfing hand cannon range is that it is a primary weapon and has to have a range about equivalent to the other rifles to stay in that category. If hand cannons were shorter range and intended to be a choice along with shotguns and what I assume was once a shorter range fusion rifle then it would not be an issue. bungie must have had some kind of huge train wreck sort of event (maybe when the development team fell apart) and stuff like all this re-balancing, which ultimately makes players uncomfortable because it threatens to affect the way we are used to playing, is the end result.

    • Is it strange that all I use are auto, scout, and hand cannons? I find no use in pulse rifles. I don't know, they all see relatively even excepting the pulse rifle. Just buff pulses. Why weaken weapons to piss of players?

      • Exactly, OP. If Bungie has an issue with one weapon type not being used because it isn't performing right (pulse rifles), then you fix the weapon type at issue. You don't break other weapon types to make the pulse rifle look good. Just further proof that Bungie has no idea what they're doing as far as weapon balancing...

        • I love all the weapon changes except for MAYBE the AR nerf.... the jury is still out on that one for me. It's nice to start up a Crucible match and see 6 people holding 3-4 different weapon types. Lots of people are checking out Pulse Rifles right now... that is to be expected. Several people are still holding onto Hand Cannons... the nerf didn't seem to affect them that much to me. And I still see tons of people using Auto Rifles. And, yes, I even see the occasional Scout Rifle. I've been pretty rough on Bungie, but in my opinion, they have turned a corner with this patch. I was skeptical about the Heavy Ammo change in Crucible but it has been great. The matches have been much more competitive and less frustrating with endless streams of rocket spam. The weapon tuning has been successful, imo. People can pick weapons that fit the map, their play styles, or their strengths. As for the whole "don't let it spill over into PvE" thing... I just don't understand that at all. It's an MMO. Get use to nerfs, buffs, changes, etc. PvE folks act like once something is in, and they get use to it, it should never be touched or changed. That is absurd.

        • I am so glad they r nerfing the op hand cannons it is not even fun to play crucible unless your using last word or thorn, bc that's all anyone uses, if they have one, and don't tell me to get good scrub or some crap like that bc you know that I am right, hand cannons are op, range and accuracy is what I mean

          • My question is, what will be the new weapon of choice? Will we see a sudden burst(pun) in popularity with pulse rifles? If so, which would reign supreme?

          • Hand Cannons and Scout Rifles are basically the same weapon? One is a pistol the other is a single shot rifle. Do you honestly think they should have the same range? Despite what many hand cannons enthusiasts say, hitting two or three shots from distance isn't as difficult as portrayed. Their range needed a nerf it's that simple. They are still going to hit very hard post-patch.

            • In my opinion I agree with most of the nerfs especially the range of fusion rifles. I think bungie messed up by taking so long to release these changes. There a lot of people who spent time upgrading there guns just because those guns were very powerful. Now they may not be as effective I can see how people can get annoyed by that. I still think crucible should be level based.

            • Well when you have hand cannon can 1 hit and they primarily kill in under .54 seconds compared to the average scouts .9ish seconds you can see why they want to nerf a gun that completely. The hand cannons offer some of the fastest kill times while retaining the majority of the kill potential that other guns have which is around 3 kills a clip. Then you apply that to the fact range limiting does not exist on them like it should and you suddenly have a bunch of guns that preform in many ways far superior to scouts. Its because guns like TLW, Hawkmoon, and Thorn that this happened also a general realization that holy shit hand cannons are not held to a certain range of effectiveness. Does a Thorn user think twice about entering into close combat? Nope, three shots and probably dead. Does the Thorn user say man hes too far away to shoot? Nope, two head shots and hes dead. Does a Thorn user have to think wisely about whether or not he has to switch his weapon based on the map? Nope, all areas check. That response is way different different than a person who uses scout riffles and pulse riffle. Bungie took a lot of steps to insure that these guns weren't to powerful like in Halo. Though it was probably a mistake. Now Bungie is just realizing what happens when shit goes unchecked. BTW this game has a lot of nerfing left to do, and I mean a lot. So you can either except that the way you play might change or continue to be of no help.

              • As an avid hand cannon user, i like the changes they are making to it. The problem with long range hand cannons is that they completely outclass scout rifles. With the range nerf scout rifles will have their own niche again.

                • You need to learn more about firearms. If you do, then you'll understand why what Bungie is doing is not only necessary..,but long overdue.

I think what he is trying to say is. You cannot base weapon damage on the Use percentage of the weapon. Auto rifles are used more because they are easy to use for Novice players. Bungie should not nerf ARs as they are already the weaker choice. Unless for example you use a Vex Mythoclast, which is still OP.

                    • Nerfing the Suros will probably be the straw that broke the camel's back. Time to move onto another game where developers don't actively attempt to nullify your progress by changing the rules of the game mid stream.

                        • Weapon ruining. Leave the weapons alone already! We have all learned to use them this way and there is not a problem. Everyone has use of the same weapons so what is the problem here. It is just like playing football in the rain. Everyone has to deal with the same elements. Leave it alone. Fix the stupid ass reward and loot system in this game. Give us a reason to keep playing besides a 1 in 60 chance that I may get the weapon or piece of armor I am looking for if I am lucky. The loot and reward system in this game is ridiculous. Look at this thread to actually see how we can fix this game. https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/99989515/0/0

                          • Give us weapons, then after we spend weeks leveling them up you mess around with them! If you want to play nerf gods in the name of balance then maybe guns should be 100% maxed out straight out of the engram. The guns aren't what's broken, it's the bs RNG that's broken. You could play for a year straight and never get that gun you wanted then another year straight for the right elemental damage on it, then another five years for the perk you want too. You get my point? There is no way to farm exactly what you want. There is no way to modify what you get. There is no way to trade what you have. There is no way to work towards exactly what you want.

                          • Weapon Ruining by far... also I love the Suros the way it is now. It's not too damaging but not too weak. That said it's an exotic and should be only long range high damage AR because that's how it was designed in the first place and it should be returned to its former glory before it was hit with the Nerf bat three times.
