The Awoken of the Tower are ones who were brought back as Guardians; the Awoken of the Reef have lived all these many long centuries. Exos: A machine race built by the Warminds (who were built by the Traveler). They are both cybernetic and organic. I believe they may have Human components to them. There's a reason why they're called races and not species.

Awoken used to be humans who fled earth during the collapse that were changed by the Travelers magic at the edge of space where the Light and Darkness meet. The Exo were war machines created by humans to help protect a fading humanity.
